Clivias looking a bit anemic

I've had a lot of trouble getting these to flower in the past. They live under a liquidambar so it competes for water and covers them in shade all summer. Its spring here in Sydney Australia and this year I've added mulch, some enriched soil and blood and bone pellets, but compared to my neighbor's clivias that have dark leaves and richer coloured flowers, both leaves and flowers of mine are a bit pale. Also, some bug keeps chewing the leaves, but I can't find it.

Any ideas on what to do to improve quality? They have year round watering via subsoil irrigation drippers that run for 15-30mins twice a day, depending on the temperature, and the moisture meter reads 'moist'.
