I'd like to know as well. I got my first figs last weekend and noticed the same thing on some of them, is it possible that the small buds will end up being the breba crop later?

It happens... Probably a variety characteristic more than anything, but also growth rate must have some affect.

Sharp thinking Sammers, the fruit buds will become brebas in the spring if they can survive winter. Unfortunately, once they develop large enough to where you can see them they are the most vulnerable to cold.

Thanks for the conformation Hoosier! I am glad that my guess was on track. I am very excited to grow figs, I went crazy overboard and got 13 varieties so we shall see which ones make it in my area. They will be going into the garage once temps get close to freezing but that usually doesn't happen until late.

Actually, my sister who is several states away but also in zone 7 said hers dropped off but mine still seem to be growing. I think we are supposed to drop into 40s tonight though--so we will see. I am sure mine would NEVER make it through a winter since I have to protect the tree just to keep it from freezing to the ground. Since it has grown so much this year, I am not too sure how I am going to do that this year. There are recipes for green figs. I saw one online a few days ago that looked like something I might eat. Try searching if they don't quite get a chance to ripen.
