Susanne, thanks for the link, enjoyed reading it on my day off! Turns out trees on Volkamer lemon have large yield but can be affected by citrus blight. My Meiwa is on Volkamer rootstock, growing really slow and in the future I might graft a twig from Meiwa on to sweet orange rootstock (rootstock of my multi graft tree, which I planted in 2015 from sweet orange seed). I think that it will do well with my container growing method; that rootstock is very vigorous and was never bothered by pests, like spider mites, scale, white flies etc.

Sunshine I wish Nurseries would put a tag on their trees that identify rootstock. I have no Idea what my Meiwa is on. I think slow growing is not so bad when in container but high productivity is great. Right now there are flower buds everywhere and even on the stem. Where did your seed come from? Just from a store bought orange? Navel orange?

I wish I had the name of rootstocks on the tree tags as well:( Only my Meiwa tree tag tells the rootstock used. We should phone and ask the seller about rootstock, every time we buy fruit trees, I think :)

The seed came from California sweet oranges from the store. Sorry, I don't remember even what type of sweet orange :( I did not pay attention to the variety it came from at the time of planting that seed, but as it grew, I was pleasantly surprised that the seedling was not affected by spider mites. There was a pomegranate seedling right beside the orange seedling with a bad infestation of spider mites, which eventually killed the pomegranate, but the orange did not get any mites. Over time I noticed also that it was not affected by scale, with plants around it with some scale on them.

Yes you are right. I will adjust the question. In northern areas it is not possible to have the citrus in ground without having kinda greenhouse conditions. And I would love to figure out the differences between growing on rootstock and own roots. And the best method is to get a lot of people together that grow them all :)

Dave in VA is correct. For container growers what rootstock the tree is growing on is really no where near as important as for in ground trees. With the possible exception of Flying dragon and rough lemon.

I turns out, my Bearss lime is grafted on trifoliata rootstock:

on flying dragon so it seems? wondering how easy it will root???

I am going to let it grow, until I can air layer it.

The tree is growing very fast, I am not worried about the fruiting top, I know it can handle one sucker :))
