I planted one in Laramie, WY elevation 7,220 ft. this spring. We'll see how it does! So far so good

Should check on mine in the backyard, we had minus 7C. yesterday morning, most years it's tough to fully ripen, even for the city of Edmonton.

I tried regular Honeycrisp, but could never get them to ripen properly here, our season is too short. So I got rid of them. This year, I planted some Premier Honeycrisp trees. Premier Honeycrisp is a sport that is supposed to be identical to the parent except fruit ripens about 3 weeks earlier. I don't know if they are available in Canada; I got mine from Adams Co. Nursery in Pennsylvania -- I think they may have exclusive rights in the U.S.. Hopefully, I'll have some news on them to report to you in a few years.

We had a very late spring also and they still ripened here. But the hottest summer ever which deginately played a role in thisn

I have a combination apple tree planted 3 years ago. One branch is honeycrisp. It produced well for 2 years now. Fruit was medium size but taste was wonderful. Sorry no picture.

I am am expecting our first freeze tonight finally. Can apples “take” a freeze and continue to ripen if it warms back up?

Are your honeycrisps really good off the tree? I'm asking because I had a honeycrisp tree a few years back, and the fruit wouldn't seem to ripen up fully (short growing season here). I planted some premier honeycrisp a couple of years back. They're supposed to ripen 3 weeks earlier than the regular honeycrisp. I hope they will do well here.

This is the only the second year and I’m a novice so my opinion isn’t worth much... but, like others have said they have trouble ripening fully I think. this was an exceptionally long season here and the one I tried two weeks ago wasn’t fully ripe, but this one may be.. I’ll definitely follow up. Nevertheless, they are super tasty, much like you’d get in the grocery store, just smaller.

I’d like to put another variety in that I know will ripen in time, so like early sept or earlier. Any suggestions?

My premier honeycrisp will probably not bear fruit for a few years yet.

I'm not sure what to recommend for an early September apple. Mantet ripened early September here, and had really good flavor, but they're soft and don't keep that long. I really like the zestar. I picked them last Sunday, so that would be about mid-September. But last year they were ripe in early September.

Thanks for the report on your honeycrisp. Smaller is OK with me, if they taste and keep like the ones I have bought in the store!

I'll be anxious to hear a report on your premier honeycrisp, Doug. What is the story of this variety? How can it be substantially different, I.e. earlier ripening, than honeycrisp if all honeycrisp are clones? excuse my ignorance

Premiere honeycrisp is a "sport" of honeycrisp that was discovered by some folks in the eastern U.S. I don't understand the science of it all, but according to the Adam's Apples website, "a sport is a spontaneous mutation that produces offspring with abnormal variation from its parents." Reports for premier honeycrisp indicate that the fruit seems to be identical to regular honeycrisp except that it ripens 3 weeks earlier. You can order it through Adams Nursery in Pennsylvania. When I got mine, they had a 5-tree minimum order, and I had to sign a non-propagation agreement.

How big do the Premier Honeycrisp trees get? Are they full size or dwarf?

Mine still have a ways to go before they reach maximum height. I understand that the Premier have the same growth habit as regular Honeycrisp. On a standard rootstock, that would put them at a maximum height of around 18 feet, I believe. Mine are on Bud 118, so shouldn't get more than about 15 feet tall. Adams nursery offers this variety with a number of different rootstocks, including dwarfing. I generally stay away from dwarfing rootstocks because of the climate here.
