You are sure it's a holly and not Osmanthus (perhaps even a bird-planted seedling), which blooms in fall? There are some Osmanthus that are supposed to be cold hardy to zone 6.

That was my first thought too. We've had that happen before.

Hollies often rebloom in fall. Has a lot to do with weather conditions.... late season warmth after a cool spell, rainfall, etc. My 'Virginia' holly is in full bloom now. Unfortunately there is not enough growing season left to form berries. I hope this late bloom won't affect the spring bloom. Here's a pic.

No, it is definitely a very large male Blue Holly bush that I bought and planted.

Something about this year is causing it in my garden too...more than I've seen before. Multiple cultivars. Also more fall blooming on rhododendrons than ever before.

Isn't it fun having something that the bees love so late in the season?

What's blooming for me now is the tropical milkweeds (adult plant not winter hardy in NJ but it freely self seeds all over the yard every year and expands its coverage), and Little Gem Magnolias that will probably go into November.

I will inspect tomorrow for Osmanthus heterophyllus, Blue Holly and Nellie (but did not notice so far).

Yes, my Blue Hollies are blooming again; also pushing new growth. Forgot to look at the Nellie Stevens or Inkberry.
