Most clematis need good sunlight to flower well. Some varieties do quite well in partial shade. The two that I have experience with are clematis Venosa Violacea and clematis John Warren. They have been doing well in shade. Hopefully others will chime in with names of other shade tolerant varieties.

They typically need several hours of sun, but not all day. I have several that are in part shade, and in my area, 5 hours seems about the minimum to get much bloom. That may be a bit different for you since your sun is more intense than mine this far north.

How much sun does the area get?

Been awhile in answering - holidays, etc. I watched the area over time and found that it gets more sun than I thought. Good midday sun, then as the sun goes behind my horse barn, it is more shaded. Pretty good filtered morning sun. Not in full, hot all day sun. I want to plant roses, daylilies, annuals, and let the clematis have the fence. Maybe a couple of climbing roses. I have some clematis in pots - Hagley Hybrid, a small Bernadine, Pillu, HF Young. Thanks!
