What I think people got a bit tired of was the ubiquitous honey oak stained trim and cabinetry. Dark stained woodwork is still very much in style, though white painted is very popular right now. These two also look good together (white trim with dark stained doors for example).

You should use what the two of you both like. It can depend on what style of home and what part of the country you're from, though as a rule, painted trim is preferred over stained by more people. You can combine the two by just staining doors, or staining some rooms and painting others, like bedrooms and kitchens.

Things only get outdated if you don't like therm anymore. Forget about what everyone else likes if you are not going to be selling your house anytime soon. Just get what you like.

By the way, if you get the wood and you both get tired of it years down the road, you can always paint it then.
