It looks like a paper wasp. There is probably a nest nearby. They aren't bad critters but nobody should have a wasp nest by their front door. Get some wasp spray (they aren't hard to kill but the wasp spray has a nice long range), find the nest, and soak it at night when they are less active.

Hopefully the next is exposed and you can get to it. Google images of "polistes nest" if you aren't sure what to look for.

Distressed insects can take up odd postures; the left foreleg on yours may be tucked under; the right fore and hind legs are visible; the right middle leg is obscured behind a wing.

Yeah looks like a paper wasp, thank you. Interestingly we had a nest on the other side of the house, guess they got confused which direction they were headed. Did the poles shift again or did we have another eclipse : )

I knocked the nest down, I hope they won't come back now, will they?
