I've used burlap before but found it tends to rot/decompose too quickly when used that way. After a while you'll start losing particles unless they're too large to go through the mesh.

It is. I was hoping it lasted long enough to secure with plants. Am I being too hopeful?

Biinaboo...Why not get yourself some coco fiber baskets of coco fiber and and pull it apart and stuff it in all those holes up against the burlap..Then behind the burlap put a piece of flat wall Styrofoam or plywood to sturdy it..Should last you a life time..Great idea you have there@!

A lot depends on what you plant there and the size of the particles you place behind the wire mesh. What I did was different. First was a steel stake to which I bound 3 small trunks (palm tree trunks which I've seen laying on the ground for years without rotting). That was wrapped with burlap with a small sprinkler at the top. Tied orchids to that and left it. The burlap deteriorated far faster than anticipated but the rest is still there some eight years later. Doesn't look spectacular but it's sort of working. My burlap didn't hold anything in, it was there basically to hold a bit of humidity inside where the roots were supposed to go, and to make it look a bit tidier. The palm trunks are still there today, except contact with the ground rotted away. But the steel stake is supporting it all.

Unless you get a rapid growth of roots to bind everything up, smaller particles will fall through the mesh when the burlap rots out. It's still a good idea, so long as you can stop loss of material through the mesh. And that would be by use of larger particles.
