Bedroom decor help!

I've seen some impressive suggestions for other people and I'm hoping you friendly people with a good eye for decor and design can help me.

My bedroom is very blah. We like the picture above the bed but that's about it. (And I feel like it gets lost on the wall) My budget can afford a new comforter, window coverings, paint and maybe $100 more.

I really like my demdaco Willow tree angels and don't want to get rid of them either (but if a new shelf is necessary, suggest away!!)

Thank you very much!!

Are there any wall colors that you like? Do you want a brighter or darker room. In darker I mean richer and cozier.

What does the other side of the room look like?

yes to new shelf for the angels! the exact suggestion(as well as other suggestions)-I'd love to know a bit more about everything else..maybe you have some concept in your head, style preferences, inspiration pics..

waiting for more info from you on your favorite colors and inclinations what that might be, and maybe another pic ot two, as asked by aktillery and 2pups4me

I can tell what I'd do of course-but it will be more helpful if we know first what you'd love

Some very general things before everything else:

-where the bedroom nightstand lights are..? they're useful. I'd say they're everyday necessity. and they can be very pretty too. don't have to be a match.

I'd put trees a bit lower..take angels and a small pic off that wall. You love the trees let them be central.

Other pieces including metal art next to the window you can group later on a different wall. Now all these are too lined up. You want them to be more free..with you controlling their freedom:)

Is the room usually dark or light? I wonder because of the plants..:) These never took away from any room I know.

Do you like rugs? How much fabric you generally like? I pile things; some people hate it. Some are in the middle.

For example I'd have a different comforter/duvet plus a throw plus a pillow on your bed. I might have a rug or might decide against it. I would have curtains.

Does it sound like too much, too little, just right..?

I like browns and burgundy and olive green colors. I feel most comfortable with shades of brown/tan/cream but think color is so pretty when done right. I just don't have the "eye" for it...which is why I'm here!

we don't have lamps on the night stands because we have a overhead light but I really think that's a good idea. I don't know why I hadn't thought about that...

we have carpet in the bedroom so I'm thinking we wouldn't want an area rug on top. But I would love a new comforter with pretty throw pillows :) I'd also like curtains. Right now we have a mauve blind that is functional but ugly....but is usually left open

What plants are you referring to?

Ive also attached a photo of the other side of our room. It's boring, ugly but functional. New furniture is on the 5-10 year plan...the set I like would be about $5,000 and that isn't happening right now.

    Thank you for sharing!

I'm referring to any plants really..some need more light, some, can survive anywhere. Plants enliven rooms, make us happy. and work in any space. They can be big, small, medium..you can pick something really easy to take care of.

Tans and taupes and different greens will look wonderful with your trim. I'd go mid range..wood likes richer colors. Warm blues will be pretty..you didn't mention them, but then burgundy might be a very nice accent to these.

How do you feel about patterns? Do you like them? If yes-which ones you prefer? Strong constrast or more vague and washed out a it? Geometry or florals or maybe animals or pictures even(fabric designs can be endless)? Tribal motives? It can be all of the above by the way,. As long as you keep them more or less within your preffered color pallette you can mix a lot. Maybe not all of these in a small bedroom, but generally speaking.

As for the sets. You don't have to buy sets. Nobody has to really. You can mix and match. As slow or as fast as your luck or budget or both allows. You can also consider second hand-some people are put off by this thought and I respect it, some, like me, choose this way to furnishing houses, at least partially, since new is either poorly made or very expensive..one can get lucky of couse from time to time.

But maybe it's a good idea to start with colors and fabrics and other smaller things, because I believe you'll emerge from it more energized, confident, and knowing your direction better.

Then you'll get to bigger things like furniture. All in its time.

Soo..except for my question about patterns..hint on a budget? style? maybe favorite stores? will be helpful to see what to suggest maybe

thank you for giving feedback it's extemely helpful. One can discuss and discuss but without knowing a bit about other's preferences it kinda remains very general level advice. might work. might not.

meanwhile..any shelf you like more than others? will also give me a hint about your tastes. I counted seven angels..looked at the sizes..should fit:) but I don't want to venture too much into options that will be too far enough from your current decor..you know too different in style, too industrial, too ornate, you name it..until you tell me it's fine, or all these are a miss

I saw more of course-but were either too small or too big..or very cool but then you need to buy brackets separately..in short, seems easy but is not))

like the texture here..angels might get lost a bit though?

(embrace yourself)) they make it in ten colors or so. includin 3 greens. but. expensive. I usually wait for their 30% sales they hold from time to time. you need to like it though. It becomes a wall decor itself. It's big enough-larger than it seems)

what I do like about it-it can be taken into any room..can be a thing by itself. but. no simplicity that other possess. More celebration about it though)

for bedding..check Gilt.com that has up to 85% sale on some bedding( couldn't find comforters though..you need strictly comforter, or do you use duvets as well?)..Garnet Hill that is generally amazing and has 30% of certain styles through tomorrow plus free shipping..another online sites that usually are good with their bedding selections are RueLaLa.com and OneKingsLane.com..you need to sign up for these but that takes a second. Always check the return policy though.

Check your stores like TJMaxx and Tuesday Morning as well..

Saved some images (mostly Target. since they have many comforter sets. I myself after having a comforter set for years now prefer to mix and match bedding from several places, usually more interesting and you don't get pieces you don't even use, and can be cheaper too). Some, try to differ texture, some, colors..these are just examples though. I did try to save the ones that have positive reviews, just in case:)

How important the material is to you? Since the cheapest are polyester. And some people dislike it. Also depends on your climate, In short, many variables go into choosing bedding

(with duvets etc I feel more free as I can change sets as I wish. Or another route to take-to have a coverlet if you prefer to have the same look, and to make this coverlet your favorite element, leaving the comforter basic color and all)

(they have it in different colors..just showing the pintuck or how it's called.)

    (very girly))

(a bit pintuck and a pattern)

(corduroy. you'll need a lot of light things to offset this one. or else will get too dreary. but I liked the texture so wanted to show it too)

(too light I know. the muddiest green I could find there. you mentioned olive-you like softer, "muddier" colors..so these should be your base so to say, the range you build your pallette with. while clearer, brighter tones get to be smaller accents.)

    a bit from Garnet Hill..

and their flannel bedding on sale-they have it two color ways, and you can pair something like this with simpler comforter too. If you want to see a pattern but just a bit of it

sorry about mentioning sale all the time..that's what I try to do myself (and then lapse in something else lol)

ok..I'd rather stop now wait for your feedback ..as I already promised lol..

Do you live near a IKEA? Some budget friendly options...

Then I would get table lamps and if the budget allows a bench for the foot of the bed. Maybe you can also check for a bench on Craigslist.

    eta inspiration pic...

My initial thought is to move one of the chests into the closet. Add some lamps to the night stands and take everything off the walls except the canvas above the bed. If you want to display your angels, I think the shelf you have now will work better than lining them up on a single shelf. Adding some panels to the window would be nice, IMO.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm going to get some lamps for our night stands and check out some comforters locally. I think once I have a comforter I can decide a lot---as far as paint and window coverings.

I have always liked the idea of a bench at the end of the bed...but functionally it won't work...we have a huge stinkin dog bed there. I took it out for pictures.

i also think once the canvas doesn't blend into the wall so much having that be the only thing on the wall would look nice.

thank you thank you thank you for all your suggestions.

As as I get this room put together I'll update. It might take awhile because I'm indecisive and not very good at this. But I'm excited to try!

you could go with a darker beige or gray.

Something like Sherwin Williams Acessible Beige, or Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan or Edgecombe Gray.

I can't really tell what colors are in your art work.

Here are suggestions for a new comforter and possibly some new decorative pillows to give the room a little more color.

about the shelf..yes, I do agree that having special framing around each piece, in case of such a collection, helps in giving each piece more attention.

So that was my contemplating too. I myself have special shelf for displaying netsuke which I very slowly collect since they're expensive(and obviously the more one collects the more he appreciates more intricate pieces, so just gets worse..)), and usually it takes some very special occassion to get a new one. So I have just a few, and part of things displayed are not netsuke even, but gifts from friends and family who think small sculptures are like netsuke and want to give me something I love..awfully sweet of them so I display them too, along the real ones.

Mine is easier since it's obviously much smaller in size.

Problem? Even with my modest collection, I already ran out of space..which is nice for my budget, but presents a challenge in case I'll have another special occasion lol.

    So my questions would be:

-will you continue collecting, or you feel you're mostly done?

-are the angels of the same size, or not? usually pieces indeed look better on one surface if they're different height

-what the future colors would be? I'm not in the room so you know better whether black gives a nice frame to angels, or overwhelms them. I do think they will be more prominent against richer wall color though. Maybe you'll decide to paint the shelf, maybe not. You'll see what's better as you go.

It's very normal to be indecisive about things we see as important, and feeling of excitement is one that will take you through this..actually the feeling itself is pretty great. Result is a result. The road to it has no less value than a result. Maybe more. Results are not final, they're parts of the road. Or so I like to think.

Good luck, and when/if you decide to share some new pics-that'd be exciting to see! Doesn't matter how long it takes..I usually alternate between stages when I'm crazily arranging stuff, and stages when I know it's still unfinished and it gives me a very strange satisfaction too:)

Since you have a patterned headboard and the picture above it, I would stick to a solid for your bedding.

ETA: If not a solid, possibly a very muted pattern folded at the end of the bed.

I see your bedroom this way with lamps, bluish with ivory bedding and ivory drapes.

Thanks again for the suggestions. And wow--celerygirl I had to do a double take to recognize that as my room! Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Drapes are definitely going up...and i also like all the pillows. Gives the room a more grown up feel---not like college apartment.

thank you to everyone who has commented. You have all given me things to think about and it has been a lot of help!

There is a bunch of sales on Overstock.

I'm just going to through some ideas out there using this as an inspiration.

What if you painted the walls an off white with a tiny tic of green and painted the ceiling like the photo above and painted the doors on the right the wall color but use a semi gloss. Leave the door on the other end as is.

You could paint the side stands white in a semigloss and use same paint for window surround and baseboard.

Instead of the window shade you could do a curtain like this (on sale on"O") but maybe pick a different fabric. Hang close to ceiling.

And maybe this quilt that also has a bit of brown and is on sale on O.

Keep an eye on craigslist for a bench to paint for the end of the bed.
