Inspecting Bulbs

Out of a bag of 100, what's considered norm or not to have a couple of soft bulbs .

The other bulbs on the bulb order in the order seem okay but this particular bag *gudoshnik*, seems to have a couple of soft ones. A good handful of these bulbs seem on the smaller bulb size.

Well, it depends a bit on the type of bulb and time of year. I had to Google your tulip (GORGEOUS by the way - come back and post pictures in the Spring!). For this time of year, I would expect to have one or two squishy bulbsmax out of a bag of 100. Ideally, there should be zero as they should be really fresh, but I consider tulips to be a bit less shelf stable than some other bulbs.

Later in the year (obviously not now), I have had a huge bag of tulips (100) with about 4-5ish not looking that great from a very reputable company.

For the sizes, you can sometimes have bulbs that have offsets. Those presumably would not be on the actual count and simply detached from the mother bulb during shipment. If you have all different size bulbs and you believe the tiny bulbs are part of the bulb count, go back to the website and see what size was promised. Some promise "top size" and some give a range of measurements (x-y in size). Some don't promise a size.

There are various websites that rate the different bulb vendors. You can Google your vendor and see what others are saying. From what you indicated, I'm leaning towards thinking you are probably fine.

Thx . It’s weird ...to compare. The blend bags are nice and fresh.

It’s only the single species that just does not compare to the blend bags . Maybe I’m looking at it wrong but there is slight quality difference between when u compare. I would’ve / sorta expected nice crisp bulbs in the single bag

Sure! Different cultivars can often have different looking bulbs. However, not being there and holding the bulbs myself, I can't really comment on whether the difference is of concern. If you peel off the papery layer, do you find a smooth, firm flesh underneath with little to no blemishes? The papery layer (I'm sure there's an actual term for it), should not have black or green mold and the bulbs should not smell bad.

Heh,maybe this particular batch was cleaned and sorted on a Friday.

That' the thing, posierosie. When I was just checking out this bag, not only did it have couple of soft ones which have been mentioned already, there was one that was distinctly off. It was sorta like chestnut - the outlet papery layer was thick and when I removed it as it was sorta hollow, the bulb inside was considerably smaller than the outer shell. A good handful of others while firm'ish - had a slight tenderness of bruising/blemish to them.

In comparison to the blends, every bulb in the blend bags (I've planted 2 bags sofar), are extremely consistent in both firmness and no signs of blemish/bruising.

A1an, sounds like that one bag had a rougher life than the others. What impact if any it has on flowering is anyone's guess. I would go with your instinct on this one. You can always contact the company and let them know the quality is not as expected and see what they say.
