I don't know for sure but I wouldn't be surprised given the climate in their natural range. However, if you want currants worth the time, care and harvesting take cuttings from a named variety or buy named bushes. Seedlings are a lottery and are likely to produce inferior fruit.

Absolutely agree - hardwood cuttings, taken anytime now (either in situ or in a pot or nursery bed), will root away over winter and grow over spring/summer, ready to be transplanted in autumn. The cuttings will indeed produce some berries the following year. Far faster and more reliable than seed.
