Dining Room Decision

I'd REALLY appreciate some help with an idea I have for our new dining room!

I'm going to use the blue and white/cream Surya rug and pine furniture. (see pictures attached) (I will be using the colorful Oriental rug in the current dining room picture in another room).

The idea I had is to paint the wall of the new dining room that currently has the cream/orange-ish ugly wallpaper a Navy-ish blue. I was thinking of using Benjamin Moore's Van Deusen blue. (might go well with rug?)
I was then going to stencil (in white) this pattern on just the blue wall.

http://projectnursery.com/projects/quincys-navy-coral-and-white-nursery/

The rest of the walls I was going to paint White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

We are going to paint the french doors leading into the room white.

Would love some honest advice on how this will look and any suggestions on blinds and or curtains, details/other pieces for the room, etc.

Here is another image of the rug.
http://www.rugstudio.com/suryasmithsoniansmi-2113.aspx?ref=frg&gclid=CIPVr72YsLcCFUKd4AodMGcAJw

Can't wait to read your advice. Thanks sooooo much!!!

The first pic is the furniture, the second and third are the new dining room (without our stuff ), and the fourth Is a close up of our new dining room rug. Will put a pic of stencil in comments!
Thanks in advance!

The white walls and navy stenciling WILL work, but you may need to paint the chairs white or cover them to get the feelng you want. Do the painting and some accessories first. You can see later if you need to break up the darkness of the table setting.

I'm confused, are the pics you just posted of the dining room that you want to paint navy and white?
Thanks, LB interiors!! Do you think white walls navy stenciling better then navy ceiling white walls? Also what do you mean by "break up the darkness of the table setting?" Does that mean a table runner or stuff for walls, curtains, etc? Sorry, I'm kinda bad at this.

It looks like the last pic is your dining room? What were the pics at the onset of the dilemma?
Yes, they are. We are switching and making the room I sent you 4 walls pics into the dining room. The room it opens into (with the chair rail) that you can see in the last pic is going to be made a playroom. (For our needs). We are switching the rooms. That make sense? Sorry I didn't explain that!
We will be removing ceiling fan and installing veranda linear chandelier, and, if course removing the ugly curtains in both rooms and the chandelier in what will be the playroom.

Oh, I had to gp back to the dilemma, sorry ...I think, if I'm understanding, the dining room has the mirrored wall. This will be the focal wall for the stenciling in the center. Is that what you were thinking?
Omg!! I'm SOooo sorry! The very first pic was just to show the furniture... My bad! It is the dining room at our rental house, thus not decorated.
In the new house, I was thinking the mirrored wall for accent wall.... But am open to your suggestions... Sorry for any confusion. Can't wait to hear what you advise!

Beautiful new home! Love it! You did post the new dining room but it was too small and hard to see it. Sorry I had forgotten. The dining room has the mirrored wall. This will be the focal wall for the stenciling in the center.

We are also getting wood floors restained... To a darker brown wood
  • 13 years ago
Morourke...Let's see what LB interiors says, but I think the ate filing with the rug would be too much. Just IMHO. However, I think this room will work beautifully or the classic American look and the rug is beautiful.
Personally I don't think you need to buy new furniture to achieve this look. You can use as is or sand/restain the chairs but I think it's very workable.
Can you make a list of changes you are planning on making and then of things/changes you are WILLING to make? Budget? Timeline? Do you have kids/dogs? Is this room going to be more formal or everyday use?

I hate to say this, I hope you don't restain a darker wood. Beyond darker wood showing dust more visibly, I love the lightness and look that I'm seeing in this home. Personally I would rather spend my money on other changes.
Maybe a new dining set that would seem to fit the grandeur of the home and lend itself to working towards updating.

The darker wood flooring will require darker art, frames, accessories and richer paint colors etc etc to balance the large spanse of wood flooring. The navy color that you love, would have to be stragetically used in order for it not to be so heavy in a room. Navy and dark wood is beautiful, but depends how much, where and it can get heavy. The navy can fight the saturations of the dark stained flooring. Depends how much navy and where it will be going.

I'm not liking your furniture on dark wood flooring unless you have a light rug under the table.

Keeping the flooring as it is, I feel that you can paint the navy focal wall ... navy stencil on white or white stencil on navy. If the floors were darker, I would not paint the focal wall navy background and white stenciling.

Thank you guys! Brooke, could you explain your comment about the ate filing making the stencil not look good... I didn't understand what you meant there , and want to.
LB interiors, I'm so sorry, but we signed flooring contract already and are restaining... I hope I can still have a nice room. They came today and sanded 4 patches where they then put 4 different dark stains for us to pick from. The good news is that the rug is going to be light... It's the surya Smithsonian blue and cream rug I have posted a few times.
Sooo, I guess the million dollar question is what cot should I paint this room?? I am not wedded to navy or to stenciling... I am open to other suggestions!! I like the preppy pottery barn look. The blog a thoughtful place has style that I adore. That's the look I'm going for. Also can you see my idea book on houzz?? That represents a few things I like. Here is the rug. Ill be back to answer Brooke's questions:)
Also, just so you can get a sense of my style, I don't care for lighter flooring... I'm much more of a dark wood girl. I love wainscoting, beadboard, neutral pottery barn colors, etc. I also think this picture is just gorgeous! So, open to ideas... Just an awful visualizer! :(
  • 13 years ago
    To answer Brooke's questions:
Timeline is fairly quick...floors getting done Friday, Painters coming 3rd week of June, moving in June 28:)
Two kids, boys, ages 7 mos and 3... They won't be using this room much, but will be passing through from time to time.
Want the room to look preppy, pottery barn-ish... So not stuffy, stiff, and formal... I will post more dining room ideas to idea book.
Things I need to keep: surya blue and white/cream rug, furniture, we are painting French doors white and getting darker wood floors and some recessed lighting
Things I want to change: paint color (desperate fir paint color ideas!) drapes/curtains/ shades, wall decor...
I love the look of pictures grouped together on walls like in the blog I like, I love geometric patterns like in the pic I posted above with the navy patterned chairs, love neutrals, love layered curtain look (windows and blinds) (see idea book), love anything preppy.
Budget : to be determined... Sorry I'm not much help there.
Ask any more questions, please-- and bring on the advice!!
Last, I'm not attached to the navy or to the stenciling... Just two things that caught my eye... But, hey, I'm sooo bad at this!!

You can do the chair design on your dining wall. Fabrics below. Add some fabric on your chairs for cushions or chair covers. I love the June lea fabric.
I don't think it's navy. Might be royal blue.

LB Interiors, thanks!! Do you know where I can find a stencil of the chairs design?
Also, the pics you just sent are for cushion/chair cover fabric ideas, right? Which one is June leaf?
    Ty a million.
    Feeling excited about this!
Also, can you suggest a few tried and true good navy's to try on my wall?
If I want to match chairs design on my wall, I should do more of a navy, not van Deusen blue, right?
These are the two stains we're deciding on for the floors. They start on them tomorrow. We're leaning toward the one on the right.
I, personally, cannot see any difference between the two.

    :)) Stencil -
Hand Painted & Stenciled Designs & Murals · More Info

There are many companies that have stencils.

June leaf is the first photo. Link below it.
For navy paint, you would have to get samples and try. They are all so different and computers read colors differently.
I like any of the blues. The first photo is also a pretty blue. It could be royal blue or lapis blue. Navy is fine too. It's a matter of preference unless you are matching something you already have, but, you can mix and match colors in a room.

If these are samples on your existing floors ... I'm a bit concerned that the stain samples that are applied directly to your floors will be different colors in the sample areas. It may be difficult getting them to match once the decision is made. It's very difficult to change stained porous wood without sanding and stripping off all the original color or sample colors.
Hi LB Interiors! The company doing the floors is going to restrip and resand the floors so that the stain will be even throughout. Basically, they go back to square 1. They said they like to do the samples on our actual floors so we can see how each stain will take to our actual wood. They said stains take to different woods differently.

I'm sorry, I don't have the link to the stencil. I copied the photo I did not copy the address. I do not know the name of the site. I've looked at so many. Just research like everyone.

I just learned something on houzz.:)) I'm fairly new to the site and I didn't realize my website link was automatically entered whenever I uploaded a photo that I liked. I posted ideas from sites I was researching and didn't copy their link. I didn't analyze the info. Just to save time. I spend too much time on houzz already :) I just posted for ideas. I'm so sorry about that! My apologies!

I'm in the process of removing my link on my uploads as I don't know the correct links.

Here is a stencil called "hourglass," that is a somewhat thinner version of LB Interiors "June leaf" stencil suggestion. Cuttingedgestencils.com is a wonderful site that'll give you tons of ideas and also has the stencil kits to purchase if and when you find the stencil you love and want to get started on it right away. (I'm in no way associated with this site). It just so happens that I learned of this site when helping out with another dilemma only yesterday. Good luck to you!

I think that all the inspiration ideas you have are pretty glam and graphic transitional and won't work with country pine furniture. I would really consider painting the furniture a bright, fun color to take away from that really country feel which will really clash with your fun new vision for the room.
    Awesome! Thanks!
So, back to my original (the first one):) and Madeline's is really close to it :)
You has said early on that I should find something that's more 50/50 color ... Instead of one color being dominant... Is that not a factor anymore? Just checking! Maybe that's when you were thinking the room was my rental house dining room? Lmk :)

The June leaf fabric is a dominate blue. If your chairs are a light wood, the June fabric may be ok. The stencils, I would paint the wall white and use blue for the stencil. It's best to see how dark the floors are going to be.

After the floors are done, I would paint the wall at the bottom in white patch about 3' x 3' and paint some blue stenciling on it and analyze and imagine it all over the wall.

Paint the reverse, in a different section and compare. Blue patch and white stenciling.

If you think it works with the wall being predominate blue, then go for it.

@morourke82 It sound like you're focused on the walls right now. But we just wanted to throw in our vote for plantation shutters. They give you tons of insulation, are great for resale value, and look beautiful in large windows. The shutters below are from Norman, ( http://blnds.cm/16skWpu) but we have a wide selection in a range of price points.

Another classic option is wood blinds, and I think they'd give you the Pottery Barn look you're going for. You can go with a wood stain to match the floors or white to lighten up the space if you paint the walls dark. Wood blinds from Levolor: http://blnds.cm/16skTtQ

Good luck! When you're ready to think about the window let us know if we can help.
Morourke, are you against wallpaper? I also believe it seems that you like a bit more of a glam look. The stencil ing, if you are set on it, could look nice if done right (ie: not so bold). You say you like PB but I think Pb seems much more plain than anything you show interest in so far.
How do I go check out your idea books?
Okay, found your idea book. Notice how most rooms which have a major patter on something substantial don't have anything else really patterned with a different pattern. Ie: patterned walls = neutral rug or vice versa. Just something to consider. Nothing is permanent so do what you love and it may be work but you can always change it!
It seems to me that you could paint the neutral walls you seem to love in so many photos in your idea book and then pull blue & red or yellow in with frames/art and draperies. What do u think?
