Help undermount sink incorrectly fitted

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi. I think my sink has being fitted incorrectly. I expected the oak counter to either be flush to sink or to have a small over hang. What do you guys think?

Also how can It be fixed? The guy that installed it keeps saying this is how it's meant to be

Of course that's what he says - he doesn't want to have to redo the whole counter!

Was there a template that came with your sink? Did he use it?

What did you tell them you wanted to have when you signed on with them? I would think that a counter either has a positive OR negative reveal, not both :(

Oh man, that looks like a wrong sink! There is no way that he would have it looking like that in his own house. Beautiful counter, and a beautiful cut out, just not a match! Keep bugging him.

Some small deviation may be acceptable; that is not. I don't know if that's salvageable or not, maybe if your sink flange is large enough and you like a large reveal. If he's lucky, you'll let him buy and install a larger sink with proper reveals. I'd go flush on a wood top.

And why no edge profile at the sink? That sharp corner is going to get chewed to death in such a high traffic area.

This is what an IKEA wood countertop with an undermount sink looks like in a year-and-a-half:

    Note the missing right side.

This sink edge has a 3/8" rounded profile.

Wipe up every drop every time, please.

The IKEA wooden counters do not impress me at all.

Wow, that is one bad cutout. It can't be fixed. You need a new piece (unless you're willing to go with a large positive reveal - which seems like a really bad idea).

Did you specify what type of reveal (positive, negative, or flush)? Even if you didn't specify, the person who installed it should have used the template and matched the radius of each corner and the radius of the transition between the two bowls. It looks like they just took outside dimensions of each bowl and then used the radius of whatever hole saw they had on hand for the corners. I'm guessing they don't do a lot of countertop cutouts - or if they do, potential clients don't ask to see previous work...

The problem is that is a TOP MOUNT sink being attempted to be used as undermount sink. It won't happen no matter what. Who picked the sink out? Who did the work?

Many top mount sinks can be successfully undermounted; I've done it. I'd have to know the model number for this one.

Just terrible. How did he template that cutout? You might be able to salvage it by scooting the sink to the right an inch and trimming the edges.

Yikes, that’s a bad cutout. Sorry.

For the record, our last home had IKEA butcherblock counters with an undermount sink. We lived there for two years, and had absolutely no water damage. And I have four messy kids, so it’s not like it was babied.

Sorry--that's a bad cutout and NOT okay!

(And IKEA wood counters may not be top-of-the line but they are decent. They are DIY so their durability depends on the person who done it. Joe's example would look the same if it were IKEA or Grothaus, assuming the installation and finishing--and user negligence--were the same.)

Thanks everyone. To update you all the guy who fitted the kitchen is coming back on Monday to fit different sink ( that doesn't have ridges) and a new counter top.

In all fairness, my pictures reflect customer abuse, not a faulty IKEA countertop.
