I’m curious, too. Most all of my ferns seemed to a few out slowly this year, so you might basically get a flush and then sporadic fronds. Also, I know it depends on whether you have species with separate fertile fronds or not.

I started thinking about this since Cystopteris fragilis will completely vanish if we are in a drought but returns happily when the rains resume. I am fairly certain that there are others, but I have not personally observed it. I collected a fern from property in the NC mountains, and it went completely down, only to return a month or so later with continued moisture. Not sure what it is. Hope to ID it next spring when it returns.
