What was in these mason bee tubes?

Hi all - This is the first year that I've had a bee house up to attract mason bees. To my surprise, I looked the other day and saw that many of the tubes had been used (tubes are cardboard with paper inserts that can be pulled out..all others are just reeds that I put in there for guidance for the bees). I'm in VT, and based on the mud-like caps, I assumed they were mason bees...it should be a good time to harvest the cocoons from what I've read but unfortunately when I opened them I found only larvae and some worm-like things. They had mud segments dividing them, but I didn't really see any pollen loaves. Can you help identify what I'm seeing? I went from being ecstatic that my tubes were filled to SO disappointed that I had no cocoons. :( The first picture of the larvae has two different types of larva in it. Thanks for your help!
