I was thinking the same thing Trish, but hadn't asked yet. :-) A privacy fence makes total sense. Of course all of us would probably plant a hedge for privacy, but now Sheila you will have privacy fence and a gorgeous tea/landscaping/hedge area. I can't wait to see what you create and develop!

I'm cheering you on, Sheila! Creating beds from scratch, beginning with the cardboard over sod phase, is very exciting. I love that you're planting all these wonderful Teas and satisfying my craving for their Victorian-Edwardian kind of delicate beauty. Your original Tea garden is breathtaking! A second will be almost too much of the sublime in one location. :-) I can hardly wait for developing updates in photographic documentation! (Hint.) Carol

Sheila do you plan on putting wires across the fence, or maybe topping it with a lattice trellis, then training a climbing rose across it? That would be spectacular.

That sounds wonderful, Cori Ann. I thought Adam could lean gracefully back on the fence, but training a climber over would take it to a new level. The fence at 6 ft high would allow the roses on the east side to get western sun when they reach the top of the fence as it is. If I put the lattice above, the east facing side would get more shaded, which might be a negative for that side.

You've got some fine looking soil there Sheila, it's no wonder all your roses take off...

That other thread photo is a different no ID that looks like a HT Marlorena. This one above seems paler than my Buff Beauty. I guess it's bush's shape could help as it grows. I considered Rubens too, after seeing Cori Ann got one from RVRs. It even looked a bit Glorie de Dijon like at one point. I'm open to all suggestions. These Tea roses look so variable at different times it is quite a challenge guessing.

Sheila I had total faith that your Jesse Hildreth would surpass mine in growth even though mine had a head start this season. Isn’t that funny how that works? Just a bit ago this spring I remember reading you’re was only 12 inches tall! Now, yours has lovely, 5 inch flowers and shot up a bunch of new basals. Mine started growing and blooming about a month earlier I guess, maybe a little more, and is doing well, but doesn’t have flowers as large as yours or growth quite as vigorous. It’s not as tall as yours is now either. Your really do grow roses to perfection there Sheila!

Your JH looks lovely, Cori Ann! I am so surprised the blooms here are so huge already. I'm not sure why the third try was the charm, but Jesse has his confidence now. I'm so glad we both have him. Your garden is amazing Cori Ann, and you give all of us hope and courage.

Thank you, Cath. I am so thrilled even as I am confused. This third one maybe was a bit older when I planted him in the ground. I'm not sure 8/31/17 was a great planting date at 100 degrees. I am so relieved. His foliage is beautiful and the blooms are beautiful. He isn't really a slow grower here. That honor would go to Comtesse Emmeline de Guigne who is under a foot tall. The Vintage book described her as a "strong and handsome" shrub. I wrote down Jeri saying she was "low growing" which is more what I am seeing. Her parents are Papa Gontier and Comtesse Festectics Hamilton. Papa is huge here and Mama Festectics has put up a couple basals so I don't know why junior is such a runt. One thing on this third Jesse was I did all planting during extreme heat, which is the opposite of what most roses like, but maybe these Tea roses it is another story. Planting early to get established before the heat hit worked less well, although I planted my first Tea garden mid January with the mostly larger ARE Tea roses and that worked fine.

Sheila, you and John, along with all the other Tea gardeners on the forum, seduced me into adding a couple more Teas. When I mentioned on another thread that all my Teas are all pink, I did a disservice to Madame Driout! I am growing 3 pink Teas plus this one rare deep crimson-raspberry striped Tea. She's from ARE and just gave me a bloom today. So far, all my ARE babies are exactly what I ordered for my garden and friends' gardens. Do you grow MD? If so, how has she been for you? Carol

Sheila, it has all come along wonderfully. It looks like by next year, the fence will be smothered. I do enjoy seeing your wider shots, as well as the close-ups. Jesse Hildreth lights up those photos of him. I can see why you can't get enough. And I am also envious of you having Clementina Carboniera - love those orangey pink Teas. I'm very taken with Adam too. Well, I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed -they're all gorgeous. Maman Cochet seems to be shyly saying "Well if you really must take a photo of me...."

I agree, Sheila, you have made incredible progress on this new tea garden. My favorite, for it's stunning color and bloom structure, is Clementina Carbonieri. I need to learn more about her. How is your butterfly garden working out? I wish I had the space for one.

Diane, The only reason I didn't co-post was because I worried that the regular forum would find the OGR news and Tea rose info too irritating. That garden.org forum did not want to separate the two topics and somewhere I got the impression some people find "mixing" topics a problem. I look at both the Antique and Rose forums but my heart is really into the OGRs. So I look at both and love people on both houzz forums but I'm not wanting to irritate people.

My CC is a joy. So far it was a bit slow to get started but has come along. My butterfly garden is coming along and we do see bees and monarchs like crazy.

I do agree I lucked out with my mystery rose from RVRs totoro. I am now thinking it must be Reve d'Or. It just looks prettier than my other Reve from ARE, but it is in better soil which might be the difference. I think Kim said that there are several different Reve clones sold and this RVR one is a beauty. It came as Marechal Niel, which it is not. I got a real MN from RPs and I love it too but it is still in a pot since everyone says it is so delicate.

Thanks for the garden update. The Tea Roses are so delightful, the pink and cream colors make for a lovely combination in the blooms.

Sheila, I don't know how I miss this thread but I am glad I saw it . It is a wonderful how everything falls in place. Your roses look so , so, beautiful. Love the grasses which gives the soft look. They sure can get huge and dances in the winds.( we have them all over here and at work. They are so , so big and beautiful colours. Watch out when wind blows)

Shelia, such a beautiful rose garden! I also got Reve d’Or from RVR and I am looking forward to training it on the fence between our house and the neighbors. It will be sometime before I have any pictures to post as all my roses are just little baby sticks right now. Love, love, love reading about and seeing other people’s gardens while I wait for mine to grow :-)

Comtesse, I threw those photos into another person's thread. I did see your kind remark. I'm sure it will turn up. I was glad to see those Fall iris blooms. They are reblooming iris, but I just added irrigation this Summer to make that happen. I think Ingrid mentioned hers were on irrigation. Without Summer H20, they did not rebloom here previously.

So glad this tea garden was also featured. It was fun to see it from the very beginning and ogle all these roses again. I'm really impressed by Adam, who is a stunner this year. So is Comtesse F. Hamilton, and they look wonderful together. For some reason when I see your beautiful roses it gives me hope for my garden, which makes no sense at all. Hope springs eternal in the gardener's breast.

Sheila, I had no idea Adam was so lovely. Photos I've seen online from suppliers here do not do it justice. I've never seen Comtesse FH except in your photos. She is blooming her head off, and I agree with Ingrid (when do I not!), they look wonderful together.

I meant to add, on another thread, that the Anna Olivier I cut back to the graft, and that in a season is now 5', was only three years old. So I'm not at all sure about not pruning Teas. Though some of them may not like it, according to HMF. And the G Nabonnand I cut to the graft this Spring was only 4 or 5 years old, and it is now 5' high and wide.

Sheila, I am loving Adam and Comtessa but i rather admire roses as they can get huge.

Trish, I do hope the Teas keep going and can tolerate some bodily loss which might be from wind here. I have had some sulk after a cane broke in wind and just sit there for what seemed like forever. They do seem to pick up steam after a slow start. My Anna Olivier just put out a great basal and then I found the top broken off, maybe from a bird. It was so disappointing. I am so ready for mine to really take off.

All my Teas really started pretty small and are own root.

Comtesse F. Hamilton had an awkward adolescence and looked terrible her second year, and now she filled out so nicely. I don't think the Teas are well known over here at all. I really don't know anyone in person who grows them. Thankful for all you on the forum.

Finally Comtesse Emmeline de Guigne is visible, all others are 5-6 ft tall.Quite cheery but a dwarf compared to parents Papa Gontier and Comtesse F. Hamilton.
All the others are triple it's size.

So happy William R. Smith is more dignified on the East side.Jesse Hildreth is starting bloom too. Wonderful rounded bush shape.I can see William has a variety of colors.Jesse Hildreth is so graceful. All just starting here. This fence garden is cooler than the stucco wall garden.
