Thoughts on kitchen design?

Sorry if this is in the wrong location--please let me know if I should move it!

My in-laws are adding an apartment to our house, and our kitchen is getting a makeover. I'm attaching the proposed layout, which keeps some aspects of the original kitchen. I'm wondering if the peninsula should remain for extra storage or be demolished for greater ease of traffic?

Any thoughts welcome! Thank you!

What's to the right of the peninsula? What's the story on the window on the range wall? Why no cabinets there?

The dining room (with a table, chairs, and bench) is to the right of the peninsula (which is open to the family room area).

There's a door (converted from a window) between the range wall and sink wall leads to the family room area. There are also upper cabinets on the range wall that aren't very clearly marked.

Here's a larger view of the area:

I agree with all of AnnKH's points. I'd move the island down a few
inches, to provide more space in the aisle for the open DW door, and
unless you need the pony wall specifically for plumbing, I'd eliminate
it, and support a 15" overhang with brackets or integrated steel
framing, which would give you a few more inches in the aisles--it looks as if there will be traffic through every aisle, because of the entries, so wider is better.

I included a MW drawer, opening toward the DR, which will help keep
anyone using it out of the prep area.

I'd have all base cabinet drawers, except under the sinks, with wide drawers on each side of the range, for pots and pans, bakeware, small appliances, etc. You can use dividers inside the wide drawers, if necessary, but less space is lost with one wide drawer, as opposed to two narrower drawers of the same width. Dishes,
flatware, kitchen linens, utensils, etc. can be stored in drawers on the
    clean-up wall.

After studying this a bit more, I'm realizing our fridge is not counter depth. Do you guys think that's still the best location for the fridge even if it protrudes 9-12 inches into the walkway?

What make and model is the fridge?

    It's an LG LFX31925ST.

    I'm thinking you deserve a built-in fridge for being a good daughter-in-law. :)

I like where your mind is at! I think we'll keep what we have for now, though.

I really like this layout the more I look at it. Thanks again for all the help!

Since you're still in the planning stage, you might consider recessing the fridge into the room behind it, or at least into the stud space, which will give you a few extra inches. I recessed my fridge into a former doorway. If recessing it is not possible, I think it will be fine on that corner, since it barely overlaps the island, and that's not the prep space. (After all, you've got a whole peninsula there, now. ;)

If you want the built-in look, extend the stub wall to the box of the fridge.
