I planted a small one this spring. From your post, it sounds like it is not particularly hardy. I better make sure that I mulch it heavily this winter.

Hardy enough (z6, maybe stretch for z5) but very doubtful for a zone 3b!! Not a huge vine by clematis standards so I'd be inclined to keep growing in a container and then moving into protection for winter. I'd be very skeptical about its ability to survive inground in that cold a zone. Even well mulched!

With climate change we are having more kind winter's although we know that can change in one season. That is why I would like to grow from seed as there is a chance for genetic variability and then selection. I have also been told of crosses with integrifolia which are very hardy here. That could make for some very interesting plant material. I received a few seeds from a gardener in California and I have some plants from seed from Ohio.

Thanks for the info. Nice to know that I have a good chance of keeping this interesting Clematis. Since it is not going to be a huge vine, I can also add another clematis to share its trellis.
