A while back, I picked up a few plants from Selective Gardener. A Rocky Mtn, Smoky Mtn and Crater Lake all of which have those peculiar round flowers. Mine have been blooming constantly for months.

The blooms on my plants are best described as very tightly packed groups of round bulbs that slowly open to become flowers. Since these plants are very prolific, I trimmed out a bunch of the smaller flowers that were being crowded out by larger, more mature blooms in order for the flowers to grow better. (Basically leaving the remaining blooms more room to develop.)

After doing this, I noticed that the blooms in the areas where I had removed a bunch of smaller blooms now opened up MUCH further that I had seen them do in the past. Actually started to become a much nicer and more beautiful plant.

I am not sure if I can duplicate this condition but I intend to try. Look at some of the flowers on this Rocky Mountain.

Jeff, look real close at my pix of Smokey Mt. Almost toward the top on the left side. One of the flowers opened very large and right below that are smaller, but open flowers. I have more of the cabbage effect on the Rocky Mountain. I love them both! Rosie

Rosie, Yes, now upon closer inspection of your photo I see where at least one of yours is opening up too.

I had mine blooming for months before one did that. Before that, they would just hang around for a month or two as small round flowers and then die.

I wouldn't mind it if all the flowers on that plant opened up like that.

Those are really unique blooms! I love the ones that open on O. Smokey but I also love the look of the tight little cabbages on O. Rocky! Glad I found them at a far away Lowe's! Rosie
