Corner Cave (Shower)

1975 house with separate cave like corner shower (in light avocado I might add) and vanity area that is open to master bedroom. The opening from bedroom to vanity is 36" and has casing around it. The vanity is 48" or so and has a left offset sink as part of the man made marble like countertop. I do like that I can sit and put on my natural glow each day despite this pitifully low vanity. This area is also carpeted (yippee) but will be replaced with tile. To the left is a 24" door that leads to the cave corner shower and toilet. There is also a built in cabinet which is about 22"W x 12"D and goes floor to ceiling with a bottom bin for dirty laundry. the cave shower is a dark, tiny, oddly shaped triangle with cracked tile, low showerhead, and low ceiling. I want to add height to it at the very least so it isn't so cave-like. The floor is terrazzo but needs to go. The toilet will also be replaced. My current budget is $4000 and I want simple and clean. there is much to do and it may need to be done in stages. Your thoughts about the cave and anything else are welcome. Please be gentle as I already know what I am working with here.

Do you think you can wait and save up some more money to do a proper gut and redo?

I was going to say the same as cp. Right now to spend a little bit of money will be throwing good money after bad as anything you do will more than likely need to be thrown out when you finally do the inivitable gut job.

I admit I am short and that it looks like an awesome bathroom. I can't tell the overall layout but it looks pretty nice. I'd pull the carpet if it's gross and do something good with the walls--perhaps fun wallpaper with a bit of that green on some walls and a coordinating color on the others (because papering behind a toilet is not something anyone should have to do). Paint the woodwork/cabinets if they need it.

I like Fori's suggestion for now and then when you have enough to do a total gut job, you can get a truly awesome bathroom, with a shower large enough, etc.

I concur.... save save save and do it right.... you would need that $4000 just to unearth the shower - open it up, raise the ceiling and do nice glass doors and replace the faucets.... In the mean time you could post a floor plan of the space so we can give you advice.

I can't speak for anyone else but many of the bathrooms we do are $12k- $15k in labor and folks spend $5 - $10k on materials....just to give you a goal....

Here is the after. I considered many things before moving forward, but when all is said and done, I think it is a vast improvement over the 1975 green tile and outdated door and I like it!

the picture looks like two different color tiles, but they are not. 12×24 on walls, 2x2 on ceiling and floor all a soft grey. Glass tile has blues and greys. all by Daltile

progress...painted wood work and built-in linen cabinet a brighter white. Removed top two cabinet doors, painted inside and added baskets for cleaner look and more organization. Floor in 6x36 porcelain tile---pearl grey and white matte finish.

new vanity waiting for countertop. (dropped the sample of countertop and it broke.) cabinet is virtu america in cashmere grey and countertop is stellar snow. I am going to take the 6x36 floor tile up the wall behind the mirror only (not the sides) after vanity top and splashes are installed to cover the particularly bad textured wall and brighten the vanity area. I replaced the dated medicine cabinet. finally mirror will be framed out and rehung. scroll up to see how the bathroom area has changed and feel free to comment.

So you went for new tile in the shower and not enlarging it at all. If that is working for your family, good. I like very much what you did with the existing linen cabinet and your vanity looks much more usable. I know someone else who loves Stellar Snow, so I expect that you will be pleased with your choice, too. My screen is playing havoc with your colors. Your gray is yellow and your white is pink, so I just cannot see them! It sounds nice, though. Is it more comfortable to work in now? Do you love it? Does it feel less cave-like? If yes, then you met your goal!

Enlarging the shower was not in the cards unfortunately. I couldnt afford to tear out, and move the plumbing which was required. Additionally there were some code restrictions involved that would have needed to be met which required more $$$$ that i dont have. However the choices i made in tile for floor and shower, the frameless door, paint colors and opening up the linen cabinet have resolved what what was a depressing bathroom. I will also update the lighting as soon as I find something.
