Fireplace mantel shelf

I would like to add a mantel shelf between the tv and fireplace and I was wondering if anyone had thoughts about a concrete/cast-stone mantel vs reclaimed wood shelf? I am looking for more of a transitional or contemporary look.


I know that concrete is significantly heavier than the other two but i was wondering if it would provide any benefits over the other two in terms of design or functionality.
