Kitchen Update Help

Open kitchen to den flow. We don't have the bodget to change cabinets, but would like to do:

-Hardware

-Backsplash

-Countertops

-Tile Floor

Its a 1930s Colonial, so I'd like to stick with trad decor. Thanks folks!

    Honestly, the cabinets look great.

In terms of the other design choices, what kind of budget are you thinking, as that dramatically influences your options?

That being said, I think a tannish countertop (I'm thinking warm marble, or rather something that mimics marble but is more resilient) would work well with the dark cabinets here. Another idea would be to do a pretty dark counter, which brings a sense of formality to the space.

For hardware, I think the knobs are tiny to the point of looking wimpy. I'd stick with the brushed nickel, but try something larger, and maybe shape things up by using a different shape, like a square. You could also do pulls. Pulls with curves tend to read more traditionally than pulls with harsh lines.

For backsplash, I'd avoid mosaics as they read pretty modern. Subway is classic and timeless, though perhaps overdone. Marble would look great.

    Hi Nicole,

My goodness, what a lovely, organized, clutter free kitchen you have, I love it!

After looking carefully at your pics and noticing the green tea box, the pictures on the walls, the maroon hallway, black lampshade etc, and knowing you'd like to keep true to your 1930's, my initial thought was how cool a traditional white subway tile with a dark border/trim would look.

I did a recent refresh with new quartz countertops, backsplash and farm sink. I used the Kohler Whitehaven "short apron" farm sink if you think something like that would be your style. It can be installed on a standard farm sink.

My kitchen is in my "my pics" idea book. It is a vintage style but the counters, backsplash and sink are flexible as to style.

If you scroll down a bit on that page, you will also see another kitchen that used the short apron Whitehaven.

Here is another refresh I really like:

I also have a wood kitchens idea book with both new and refreshed wood kitchens.

If this was my kitchen I would remove the short splash and put in a simple backsplash (probably cream subway tile) and I would do a hood vent and get a small micro for the counter - I'm short and don't like reaching up to the microwave:)

I'm posting pics showing your same color cabinets with a variety of countertops/flooring/ tones,,,,this will give you an idea of which way you want to go.

creamier floor tones and a warm granite. (possibly name Lapidus or Sienna)

the granite looks like Kashmir White w/regular subway tile. this will give you an idea if you lightened it up w/white tones. For the flooring, you could do a porcelain tile w/the same color tones as the granite

cooling things down w/gray tones. gray flooring, gray backsplash and using Delicatus (aka Alaska white) granite

using creamier tones. this splash looks like a silver travertine

this countertop is Super White Dolomite

you may want to consider bringing in the same flooring as in the other room.
