Kitchen Sink Size

Looking for a little guidance on the size of our main under-counter stainless steel sink. We've narrowed it down to two, both from Create Good Sinks.

1) 37" wide (35-1/2" interior)

2) 34" wide (32" interior)

They're both single-bowel. The island is 36" wide.

Also, what is the optimal depth - 10" or 8"?

Thank you,
Robert

My current sink is 8” deep, and anything deeper than that would be uncomfortable for me to work in. I’m 5’3”. Either width sounds ok to me given the size of the island.

It seems most sinks I install are 9" deep. Either sink will work well, but I've never heard anyone complain of too large a sink.

Either width is good, imo. I would prefer the 8" depth though. I used a deep sink while our kitchen was being renovated and found it more than just a bit uncomfortable. Don't forget that you get an extra inch of depth when it is undermounted.

I'm not a designer or a pro in any sense, but I'll share my new experience with a large single bowl sink. Mine measures 30"x17"x9" deep. I can't imagine needing or wanting a larger sink, unless you're a professional chef or use really large cookware. Remember, too, that food and stuff gets all the way out to the corners, and you have to wrangle all that crud to the center drain. I'll probably get grief for that last bit, but I'm coming from a double sink! ;-)

The size of your sink base tells you what will fit inside that sink base without altering the cabinet. No to a 37” sink unless you have a 39” cabinet.

That 37" sink is a monster! If you tend to pile things up in the sink then you might need it or if you are setting it up with the components like a strainer or cutting board or things that would remain over it then I can see that size being ok. I have a 10" deep sink and dislike it. Too deep for me....

    Good luck!

I have a 30" sink installed in a 33" base cabinet. Until about a month ago, I only had divided 36" sinks. The 30" single basin is more width than I could ever need - I would not get a 36" unless I was cooking/baking with extra-wide pans.

Like Sophie said, your cabinet and your contractor's installation method may constrain your options. Mounting clips would not have fit into my 33" base cabinet without notching the sides, so we used a different mounting system.

My sink is 8-1/2" deep, plus 1-1/4" countertop, and the depth is perfect. I wouldn't want it any deeper for a clean-up sink. On the other hand, my 15" prep sink is 10" deep, and that is perfect for filling narrow pitchers, coffee maker, etc.

I'd go as wide as sink base allows. I have a 9" deep sink with stainless racks at the bottom, effectively making it 8" deep -- this works fine... I would not go shallower... 10" deep with racks on bottom would be okay too. HTH

Ask yourself what kind of dishwasher am I? If your a soaker and wipe/rinse ( you fill sink up {3-3.5inches} with hot soapy water , add dishes for a bit of a presoak before sponging and rinsing) then I would not go much beyond a 28" to 30" wide sink. I f you are a scrub/rinser ( about an inch of soapy water, you take each plate/bowl/cup etc. one at a time and scrub/rinse) then any size works. Definitely 8-9'" over a 10" . Only 17% of our user surveys showed 10" to be "good". Did extensive research into this a few years ago.

Can I ask with all that space why you want your oven underneath your island and not at a height that is easier to use? You have the whole back wall where the microwave drawer is.

Honestly the layout is less than ideal even though you didn't ask. Lots of wasted counter space.

I have a 10" deep sink, and I find it a smidgen too deep.....not enough to be a problem, but enough that I notice the depth. I don't need it that deep, but there were other reasons I chose the sink I did (a 30" single bowl by Krauss) that I was OK with the depth. I like that it's deeper than the more standard 8" -- too bad it wasn't 9". Actually (now that I think about it) it comes with a 1" high grill for the bottom that I don't use, so I guess that would be a solution if I cared enough about the depth.
