The flower spike look like a Aechmea or a Vriesea but I am not an expert :)

pitter_col - That's a magnificent looking inflorescence and a great photograph; congratulations. It's times like this when a drone would come in handy.

I think your plant could be a Tillandsia - Although it seems that many growers just think of the small silver grey "air plants" ever time they hear the name Tillandsia mentioned, (at least I know I did) until one day when visiting a friend who had an enormous mixed collection of bromeliads. She showed me a plant of Tillandsia ruihii with an inflorescence over six feet in length; wow! what an eye opener that was.

It was then I learned there are other types of Tillandsias with green leaves as well as the silver leaved types and some of these grow to very large sizes, so it's quite possible the plant in your picture is a Tillandsia.

I can't see any open flowers in your picture do you know what colour the flowers are? If you can get more details such as approx. plant size i.e. width and height as well as width and length of leaves and whether they are smooth edged or have spines. I know this will be very difficult with it being high up in a tree, but any info. at all (even if it is just approximate) all helps when searching fr an ID.

Armed with this extra info. and your permission to use your picture I could try and get an ID by posting on some other brom. sites I regularly visit as long as it's alright with you.

This is a poor photo as I used an old, now fogged zoom but it shows the whole plant. The stalk is about one meter long. I don't see any flowers yet.

Here are two more shots. I can't tell if that's a flower in the heavily cropped image but I saw hummingbirds visiting the plant so there must be something there.
