Depends on the waterproofing system you select. They will have offset linear drains specifically designed for them. You can't purchase a linear drain online and then expect it to work with any system. It's a common mistake folks make thinking they may save a buck. My personal choice is USG shower system with Infinity drains.

You can build them with mud pans, but that's brutally demanding work.

Waterproofing on the top is far superior to a saturated mud bed. Water-in / water-out systems are fading into history. The choice becomes sheet membrane or liquid applied. Both work fine. It is a personal preference. I use sheet membranes as they are basically a commercial roofing system that has been around since the 70's. With liquids there are to many variables IMO. Humidity, temperature, to thin, to thick did it skin over due to breeze or sunlight affecting proper cure? Did I apply the proper wet film thickness to achieve the correct dry film thickness? I mention this because we know that all installers using liquid applied will continually take measurements with their film gauge. Oh wait. Many are saying whats that? :) If there is a failure you can bet it will get measured by the manufacturer. With a sheet membrane I know what I have. Just an opinion from one side of the fence.

Thoroughly read and heed Creatives advice its A system you want and need and your safest bet is to choose A system that will work for the demands of your substrate and plumbing and that your Tile PROFESSIONAL is well versed in installing so Id start there talk with the Tile professional. You dont per se pic a drain and then set about finding some knucklehead to attempt it.
