They are frequently planted in Southern Caifornia, which shares a similar zone. However, those zones only speak to winter cold tolerance and do not reflect issues like summer heat and humidity, which can be just as limiting to the successful growth of plants as winter cold.

One way to tell how successful they might be is to see if any are growing in your area or if local nurseries offer them for sale. Or you can just try one and see how it does......a gallon sized clematis vine is not an expensive investment :-))

I’m in So CA zone 10a. My climate is very dry but my temps are warm, and I get no winter chill. I grow several clematis. Bluestone Perennials offers some inexpensive options listed for zones 9-11. They are small plants, but you could use something like that to get an idea of what will work for you. Lisa

There was a poster at one time on this forum from the SE, perhaps SC, and he said that he had best luck with some of the Viticella hybrids which are all type 3 prune/hard prune. While not large-flowered, they typically have the open, flat blooms of traditional garden hybrids, just a bit smaller. In my garden they usually are really prolific in producing blooms.

Brushwood Nursery lists a large number of clematis to zone 10.

Plan to mulch well around the plant, though not right against the stem, to help keep moisture even.

I have successfully grown Prince Charles in this same west-northwest exposure on the back side of my garage here in Houston. Prince Charles is listed as either a viticella hybrid or a late large flowered group on the Clematis on the Web website. I really love the violet blue color of Prince Charles, which is a color that seems to glow at dusk. I also think most any of the viticella hybrids would work well for you. In my experience, these types of clematis can be cut back after bloom, and they will repeat bloom, pruning for the last time at the end of summer, just like one would do for roses to get a larger fall bloom.
