Personally, I think that that buffet needs a single large piece of artwork that has a lot of white in it, probably a white frame, and is highly graphic in order to keep it company and help bridge the relationship with the dark table and chairs. You could put other smaller pieces of art at the sides but I think that they should be very white also.

I agree with the above...this example is a triptych, but a single piece could be created with sweeping movement across a longer piece...framed in white or silver would look nice...blue adds a water element and could blend the old with the new nicely.

thanks! I intend to change the drapes. it came with the house so I just have not replaced it. I do get your point with the mirror. Maybe you are right. I just got the buffet table that is kind of pricey so I am hesitant to paint it. I will continue to look for an art piece for that.

All great ideas. I think a grouping of prints in mirrored or chrome frames with white urns or two white buffet lamps on each side would look quite stunning as well.

I think if you are tying to mix old and new, you need more "new" to set off the "old". Right now that buffet looks out of place. Maybe a new "new" chandy, some modern window treatment and then some art prints in "old" frames above the buffet.

To bring the table and buffet together, how about either one long vertical or 2 horizontal white corduroy runners across the dark wood of the table and a piece in dark wood (shallow bowl or trenchers) on the white buffet?

Jengmd, if you feel like mixing old and new, any one of these pieces may work since they have enough light and dark tones in them to bridge your white cabinet with the dark table. Due to the ornate chairs, I have to agree about the drapes. You could "antique" finish the buffet as is it is very stark. Just to tone down that stark white. I agree with the comment on the mirror. Unless you find a very heavily "antiqued" mirror glass where it reflects light but really not images, What is your overall style? Are you going for an electic mix? It sounds like it. Are you keeping the green walls?

Window coverings - I would use something largely white, simple, and with a texture that will make it happy with the ornate chairs and buffet. Maybe a nubby silk? Or a damask?

I am planning to keep the green walls. most of our walls are beige. i am planning to incorporate greens in my living room too. my style is traditional but homey. i will look for those drapes.

I agree with HERE DESIGN that you need MORE white in other areas of the room to off-set the white buffet and draperies with a lot of white will be a good place to start. Maybe put a large beautiful white soup tureen in the center of the dark table.

I don't think the ship would be good above the buffet, but it may fit in your designs elsewhere, the style of it seemed to suit your home (in my mind).

Lovely set and lovely buffet ,but white is a bit too stark in my opinion perhaps you could paint it in ivory and brush some Gold leaf on it . I like the Tall ship painting that Angelina Vick posted for your room .

I am of the opinion that if you don't want to change your pieces, you don't need to do so. I think that there is a way to marry the pieces you already have into a more cohesive aesthetic. Here's my opinion:

1. Drapes: go with long, white (maybe a soft texture) drapes. Keep the details more on the crisp, contemporary side.
2. Mirror: Don't do it. :)
3. Art above buffet: I am undecided, but think that a grouping as Mark suggested could work very well

The accessories will assist you in marrying the styles of your existing furniture.

1. Buffet: I suggest a small grouping of old greenish/brownish and white contemporary urns for the buffet. This is perfect place to bring your styles together.
2. Table top: Bring in something fairly contemporary with glass and white. I'll find some pics to post.

I have the same thoughts of bringing the brown over to the white and the white to the brown. I would start with two buffet lamps.

For the table top, you could use a white textured or white patterned or white/semitransparent runner. You could then mix and match different types of glass hurricanes, candlesticks, pillars and tea light holders. Use bright white candles.

and change the hardware on the buffet to a silver knob instead. I would use white drapes perhaps with a slight pattern or just plain- on the table top tie in the white with a vintage white bowl or vintage table runner in white- for the buffet you want to bring some of the wood color over-

In the last pic, I like how the glass candlesticks and the urns echo the details in your chairs. The art brings in the greens, whites, browns, as well as a nice organic detail.

Thank you for all your input. I will take into consideration all your ideas. I like the look of The accessories suggested. I have some pieces that have sentimental value like the chairs. I also have these 2 pieces that I was thinking of adding but I am open to reframe it. It is an embroidered piece from Vietnam. I also read it is more interesting if frames come in odd numbers so I am trying to look for prints that can marry these. Someone will give me a large painting with Asian women so I thought it might go with these. I plan to put that painting to the other wAll.

I think there are things they put in decorating magazines (such as the thing about odd numbers) that you should feel free to ignore. ;) I think, however, that you do need more work for this wall. These embroideries are nice. I would have them reframed in white box frames so that there is space between the UV plex and the textile with white fabric mats. Personally, I would be careful about getting thematic with the artwork. Without having seen your Asian Women, I might want to put it elsewhere.

I really like the one with the tree sceen, that's why I was asking if you were keeping the color of the wall. It seems to echo it and creates a peaceful atmosphere.
