Pruning question

When I prune off branches from Live Oak, Laurel Oak etc. (1-3" diameter) do I need to be concerned about insects, fungus etc. I moved from the North and this is a whole new game.

I prune my dozens of various oak trees all year long, mainly small branches. I've never done anything to the wounds and have never had any problems. Old timers used to say take a handful of soil and rub it on the wounds to help them heal over

and prevent infestation. but I wonder if that only applies to trees that weep fluids

when pruned.

I don't even do anything for big cuts! Never had a problem - but perhaps I should be more careful!

Katherine, we have the professional arborist pruning the oak trees, they are expensive but worth the value, they get them cleaned and we have no bugs around them and especially after the hurricane, our trees were in the best shape because of the work done before. To keep them in good condition, we do a light trimming when needed.

If you are using a chain saw to prune i found the suggestion to use an organic based oil instead of a petrolium based oil on the chain...i called around trying to find an organic based chain oil and found none locally. The guy at ace suggested using canola from the kitchen...works great.
