Some palm trunks have great surfaces for orchids to grow on. I've got some on an African Oil Palm. But they can let a lot of direct sunlight in, good for some orchids and not so good for others.

that is a great display of naturalized orchids. Great for the plants and great for the grower as they require much less maintenance and are way more forgiving than potted plants... I think I posted a whole list of benefits earlier this year on plants grown on trees... Harvey, you were part of that thread, if you find it pls put up a link to it. another great tree to use is a yellow tabebuia, shallow rooted even as a seedling, but is the closest we can get to a cork Oak type bark. I grew a few of those trees from seeds picked up in my travels, just to plant orchids on them.and they grew fast and furious.

Ben, if you plan on staying where you are, consider a little bigger than you think you need. plus enough room for a small table and chairs. A large number of days per year the best climate will be next to the orchids. It is a good living space for people and plants alike. It is my regret that I did not make it bigger.
