Help me style this entry please.

Hello Houzz People,

I have struggled with this entry way for years with multiple iterations of how to design it. When you open my front door, there is a huge 16' wall right in front of you. What do I put there? The dining room is to the left and the doorway to the kitchen is on the right. I have a coat rack and chair immediately inside the front door on the right. The living room open to the left. This is such an awkward, asymmetrical area.

What would you put on that wall when you first walk in? And should I change this light fixture? I feel like its very yesterday instead of now.

I'd like to keep the framed orange crate labels, but what about the table, baskets, rooster, plants....what to do?

I just feel like it's too busy. I'd do it all smaller to leave a bit of framing space, with maybe one larger piece of art and one-three smaller items on the table. You're already seeing two additional rooms in this view, so this zone just needs to be welcoming and a bit simple -- by thinking of it as a Huge Wall, i think you've been pressured into doing Too Much.

You may not need to simplify all the way to this, but it gives you a sense of what might be possible in that direction...

What about hanging them like this to bring in the height of your ceiling.

I'd suggest you take the lower central crate label away and put the rooster there. Remove the plants, and put a low silver bowl on either side of the rooster beneath the other two crate labels. Just for a start. I've come to the end of a hard day's work and that's the sum total of inspiration I have to offer right now. I'd like the baskets to hold something one can see -- wood or a pile of woolly scarves and winter throws? Not icky sticks sticking up. Something you can see because you are looking at them from above.

I love your pictures! I likephuninthesun's idea of hanging them vertically. Really does attract attention to the height of your ceilings. Do people take their shoes off here? If so, a tray might be nice under the table. I would put a tray on the table as well for keys, etc.

Keep the framed labels you like, keep the table. Remove the stuff on the table and the baskets below it. Replace the light fixture.

Having half the framed labels covered by stuff on the table, and the other half jutting above the top line of the door frame, are the things that don't work for me. I might only show three of them there - and perhaps the other three elsewhere in the entry? The rooster and two plants is also too much, competing with the pictures - agree with others.

Thank you everyone! It sounds like everyone agrees less is more here. My husband will kill me if I try to move the pictures because the framer (who I don't recommend at all - eh, hem, Michael's) has the hanging wires on the back all at different lengths. It took my husband a long time to hang them in the right places and they can't be moved easily. Removing all the baskets and stuff on the table is probably a good start. I agree a lower buffet would be better, too. The chandeliers in the entry and dining room are ready for an update. Thanks!!! I knew you would be able to have a fresh take on this.
