Vented to vent less fireplace

I moved a vented fireplace from the corner of my living room to the center of a wall. I did not want to install a vent so I am going to vent less. Can I use the firebox from the vented one? If so, what do I put in the hole on top of firebox to stop heat from catching something on fire above it? Can i just put concrete or drywall circles in there?
