Pergola kit??

Does anyone have any experience with a pergola kit???(from Home Depot or somewhere similar) We are planning to incorporate a pergola into our expanded landscape plan and assumed we would need to have a builder design and build. But it was recommended to us to assemble a pergola kit instead. I'm skeptical. Any insight would be appreciated
