I don't want a divorce so help please!

My husband hung my sign too high and off center. I'd like to avoid the conversation about unnecessary holes in the walls if I can. Is there a way to make this look purposeful? I was thinking of maybe adding some metal planters to the side and maybe a long sign underneath. What do you think?

First I would use Monkey Hooks. YOU could do a Monkey Hook.

Secondly; depending on what was used to hang the picture, like a screw? nail? Removing it won't leave a huge hole. If you don't have any joint compound to put in the hole, use some toothpaste in it. I'm thinking you won't need to paint at all. Just get the hole filled in and it will blend in the wall.

Just move the picture rather than trying to make what you have work.

Just put it where it where you want it (mid picture eye level-lots of help online) mark the hole and patch later. No biggie. Use a command hook for the new hole if you want. The top of the pic may even hide the old hole.

My dh used to go on about all the little holes from pictures. If that's his biggest issue, life is good!

Hmm.... I see a drill on the table nearby...what kind of hanger did he use? Hopefully just a screw in a stud and not a Molly bolt.

At least its level. lol I don't mind the not centered part, but it is too high. When I ask hubby to hang I mark. He's 6'4" I'm 5'3". We have completely different perspectives on "eye level". He hung a mirror with hooks in the laundry room for me; I can't even see my face in the mirror. Gotta love 'em.

I agree with akl-vdb. Just rehang, patch and move on. You won't be happy until it's right. (That's why I've learned to DIY!) Good luck with your room!

There is almost no picture on earth that requires a SCREW, let alone that one. Why did the hardware store gift us with 50 and 100 lb picture hooks??? Yet one more reason to do this when the cat is away............

I'm reluctant to complain because I didn't ask him. I mentioned I needed to do it then left the house. When I got home it was hung. It was a sweet gesture.

Do not try to compensate for artwork hung in the wrong place. Just redo it the way you’re supposed to. It doesn’t take rocket science to find the horizontal center. Patching holes is a fact of life. That’s why God made spackle and you keep a little touch up paint around.

(differences in height/husband being an engineer ..that's my story lol. what's yours?)

but look at how straight it is, on the other hand? look at how tidy the job is done?

Jan lol)) no need to be harsh though-I for example can't do any physical stuff like that-I would love to but I can't and doesn't depend on me and won't get better. Frustrating but it is what it is. (I can recite though many poems by heart lol. very useful in everyday life.. ) and we don't know the OP, and it can very well be that it's perfected to that wall much more perfectly than we think:)

But Irricca if you're more capable than me(fortunately most people are) it can be easier than you think. Do what everybody suggested. Unless it's much heavier than it seems and is indeed bolted in there in a very special way..or you have a piece you love for there anyway, or are willing to wait because having just a sign there was never your intention.

But even if not..why divorce? no divorce, husbands are slowly evolving..I even got one painting hung at my waist height-in a gallery wall of sorts-since I looked at it for months and decided that's where I wanted it, and when DH told me "lets put some paintings up" I told him no, he won't like what I want and I don't want to argue, I'd rather let it stand .and he said "Try me", and behold, it's exactly where I want it to be against all my gloomy predictions.

(ah Iricca missed your explanation. Well I understand perfectly.

    Hopefully you can redo it

Try to see how he attached it?

If anything else fails-he's a sweet guy..he'll understand.

Just mentioning and leaving -yes..I don't leave such things to chance lol..hard enough with me standing there even..but very sweet of him, indeed

    (yes..lots of similarities, lol)

Honesty is the best policy. Tell him the truth - that you love him for his thoughtfulness but it is hung in the wrong spot. Otherwise he'll surprise you another time with a similar loving but misguided gesture.

My brother and I are both men, and we hung all the art in our house, plus we have also hung art in art galleries - gender has nothing to do with it, but you do have to come to an agreement on the average eye level between the two of you before you rehang it. Hanging art (like buying furniture) should be done as a couple - not by just one or the other.

"Honey, thank you SO much for hanging that picture. It was so sweet of you! Please don't be upset, but I really need to ask you to hang it lower and more centered on the wall. Here, let me help and it will take us less than 10 minutes."

"Honey...... you know one of the many reasons I love you and married you? Because you are big and strong and most of all thoughtful. But I have to crane my neck, so could we drop that picture down to my size?! "....................................there ya go.

Then volunteer to patch the hole and kiss him. Ps Mine is better than the one above lol

If you're hanging pictures that will be viewed from a standing position such as in hallways and foyers the best rule of thumb is to hang your artwork so its center hangs at 60” to 66” from the floor. Regarding hanging pictures at eye level, it can be very confusing especially if you're 5'4” and your partner is 6'3”.

Well, it was a sweet gesture. Unfortunately I don’t think you can make it look purposeful. If it were me, I’d wait a week or so, THEN either move it yourself or tell him you’re craning your neck to see it and it needs to be a bit lower. That piece looks fairly lightweight, so I would hang it with the command strips that are like Velcro. No holes necessary and it’s pretty adjustable so easy to get level or move a little up or down. I have found these strips at Walmart.

Ha ha. Too funny. All of it. My husband refuses to hang any picture unless I put a paper cutout on the wall first showing exactly where I want the hole drilled. That way, if it's wrong, it's all on me. :)

I avoid the whole conversation by hanging everything (unless it’s super heavy) myself!

My husband and I almost got divorced over a cigarette lighter. No joke. Still married after 31 years.

What JanMoyer said. And your DH is a sweetie.

That sign is in no position to know.

    Just sayin'.

Just tell him. Thank him and tell him. You could do it yourself too, but TELL HIM first. I highly doubt he'd be upset any by it being too high, but just moving it is strange. Communication!

A small hole in the wall vs that hung where it needs to be--no contest. Just get a hammer and move it while he is out--he will NEVER notice!!!

  • PRO

I bet if you move it to the correct position he will not even notice you moved it! Repairing the nail hole will be very easy as others have described. This is certainly not worth even a tiny argument. Good luck!

Maybe every week you can lower/center it by 1". Spackling and painting as you go.

    Kidding. Obviously.

Hubby and I always do the hanging together. Or rather the deciding part (he does the tool requiring bit). One of us holds it against the wall. The other stands back and assesses. Then we change places. A quick pencil mark and then he does his thing. Works like a charm.

Although come to think of it, he did hang a mirror near our closet without me. Yup. Too high :-)

Given its relative unimportance I haven't mentioned it. Yet.

"I'm reluctant to complain because I didn't ask him"
    You don't need to complain.

Just as the same message can be put across as a genuine praise/intended insult/mild observations, the same thing can be said as a complaint or as a request/suggestion/stated preference.

Yes: Thanks, I really appreciate it, it was wonderfully thoughtful of you, I do think we should lower it a bit though, and I'm treating you to ... this weekend.
No: uhmmm thaanks but I actually don't want it right there, it looks odd, you should have waited for me, men...

Life is simple. Don't complicate it.

my husband does the drill work (we have plaster over lath, yes, things are appropriately hung on a screw into the lath), but i put an orange sticker on the wall where the screw is supposed to go. the math is mine, the upper body strength is his.

    the math is mine

Math is your friend. It really is possible to hang something exactly where you intend it to be.

Never ask a man to hang anything, unless you give him the rules and he's willing to follow them. 5-5-75 usually works. Either 5" above a piece of furniture or centered 5' above the floor if hung alone, and never more than 75% of the width of the furniture below it. Easy to remember and easy to do - even for a guy!

Lol, if our app can save your marriage it would make my week. PictureThat (Picture That AR on app store) lets you hang virtual photos and paintings using your iPhone/iPad. Perhaps it will help give you some options to discuss with your husband before making any additional holes on the wall.

I most recently used it to figure out where to hang a TV before drilling 1/2" holes in the wall for the steel stud anchors and wall mount. Here is a quick blog post about it: https://medium.com/picturethat/renovating-our-office-distributed-co-located-team-c0197e1c9738

Ok let me be clear. I’m not afraid of my husband nor am I worried about getting a divorce. It was just playing. Those of us who have been married for years sometimes avoid certain conversations just because we know we’ll be annoyed or you’ll have to hear the other complain. It’s not that deep. I also don’t like to make my husband feel unappreciated, so there are times I’ll work around, rather than ask him to change something he has done for me. That’s part of being married. I was merely asking for thoughts on how I could make this a “work around” issue. Better?

" Honey thanks so much for hanging that for me. It was very sweet of you. However, it's a bit to high, would you mind lowering it 18"? Thanks again, appreciate it".

thats really all that needs to be said. not a big deal. working around it because it's too high when it's easily fixed, without having to buy other stuff or put more holes in the wall is really not necessary.

If he doesn’t want unnecessary holes in the why’s he hanging pictures like that?

Just fixit while he’s gone. It will take 40 minutes tops.

    last modified: 8 years ago

I don't think there is a work around, due to its height and after you add lots more holes to hang things around it in your attempt, the wall repair will be much worse and take much longer..so he'll probably be appreciative of you saving his time in the long run.

It seems disrespectful to redo the efforts of a spouse behind their back unless there is something understood between them. (for ex., If I do x and if you don't like it feel free to change it...)

Hang a shallow decor shelf below.

Maybe he was just looking for a stud and that's where he found one. And eye level for him while standing there is exactly where he hung it.

Update. I left the pic where it was for about a month then this morning told him that I wanted to move it down a little to fit with the other decor I was putting up. Went over perfectly and I think it looks much better.
