This Youtube video contains a wealth of information and advice for those of us dealing with the often harsh conditions in midwestern gardens. It is a lecture by Ed Lyon, director of Iowa City's arboretum and author of "Growing the Midwest Garden". His emphasis is on ornamental plants and trees, not food gardening, although many of the the same principles apply. For the first 15 minutes he talks about the arboretum and its projects. He then goes into the many factors beyond winter temps that affect plant hardiness. He talks about the stereotype that midwestern plant culture is all about prairies, and how diverse the midwest actually is. He discusses the trend toward "native" garden plants and the fact that most of us are no longer growing in native soil. Toward the end of the lecture he talks about various plant genera and some of the problems caused by trends in hybridization and fast production of new cultivars, and how many plants are coming to market without being trialed properly. Heucheras are discussed at length. Echinacea, hydrangea, gaillardia, are also included.
