Lighting Design Dilemma

Can we create ambient lighting without ceiling lights?

In interior design there are at least 3 layers of light: ambient, mood and task lighting. Ambient lighting generally comes from ceiling installations. However, can we create ambient lighting without ceiling lights? And if yes, how? Can you please give me any suggestions?

You can do very bright up lighting to bounce off of a ceiling and provide a nice diffused general lighting. But it is a lot easier to have light from multiple sources and multiple directions.
