As soon as I heard about it, I knew exactly what was happening with my 10 year old pear tree. Although producing leaves and fruit, It easily wobbles as if it is growing out of a ball and is not extending roots. I have Shepard Hook plant holders keeping it standing else the wind would have its way.
I now know that I should have set it in bare rooted and separated them with soil.
We have had a few hard frosts and wonder when I can/should pull it out and do the surgery now or wait until later in the winter.
Pull it out, clean off the root ball (literally, a root ball), dig the proverbial $25 hole and set the tree back in.
