True but I have cut them up into gallon freezer bags and put in freezer. I first thought the rinds would be a problem, too hard, but not so . After thawing out it seemed to soften more like rubber. Anyway the worms are disposing of them. I just take a bag out of freezer and let it thaw for a couple of days then its ready for the worms. Since I do have thousands of worms they get the job done for me. 3 reg size pumpkins is all I want as it fills my freezer. I might add that this is the only time I get any drainage, pumpkin and melon. To cushion the blow I lay several sheets of newsprint down dry, then put the pumpkin on top of it to help soak up some of the liquid. I keep a bowl under the drainage spout with spout open .

IM finding that even though the worms like pumpkin, they like it more when I mix kitchen scraps with the pumpkin. Hey we all like a little variety once in a while.

I enjoy watching mine collapse and rot into the ground, then hundreds of new plants sprout. Pumpkin is quite wet, so add in moderation.

Reminds me of the time I took half a watermelon, ate the inside, then filled the shell with fruit & veggie scraps and put it in the bin. They did finish it eventually, though it did take quite a while.

I've found worms like a variety of food and the outer shell of the pumpkin can be hard for them to breakdown. Also the seeds spout like crazy if you put them in the bin and the shells seem to never really go away.

I've pulled butternut squash & potato seedlings out of my worm bin, they're all doing well so far. I've put some in the ground and given away others. Sort of an easy incubator for seedlings to start.
