I love the swing idea! Maybe add a door mat that’s proportioned to the area better. Instead of empty urns, add some plantings. It’s already charming, what a fun project!

What's the temp where you are? I always put full hanging ferns out on our porch. When I take them down in the fall it always looks bare and spare.

I live in Charleston SC. Thinking about getting an outdoor rug, some outdoor pillows for the swing, and painting the porch ceiling a light blue. Also getting a fan with light ....

This may not be something you want but how about a string of lights or a lamp for some ambient lighting.

Perhaps paint the door and trim on the porch window a deep blue green? And yes to a blue ceiling as well!

Just added these pillows (which I may return bc they have a label on them saying California proposition 65-which can cause cancer, birth defects, etc), rug, and table ...I'm thinking about hanging a plant, and putting a lamp or string lights. Any other suggestions? Thanks !

Cancer causing pillows - yikes! They are nice colors/ shapes though. You already have one of the coziest and cutest porches Ive seen in a while - so I dont think it needs much else except lights (small golden type reminiscent of fireflies are my fav) and perhaps a pair of concrete planters in an appropriate vintagey design for the two low walls on each side of the steps. On the other hand I d be careful about too much stuff - does it really need a fan, and Im not terribly fond of the trip hazard, errr.... I mean folding table. Nor hanging plant if you get something colorful and lush going in your planters. Do you have any thoughts about getting flower beds/ border along the sidewalk put in?

I took off the cancer causing pillows and got light blue paint to paint the ceiling. The fan will be a ceiling fan with lights... you're right, I def do not want to clutter the space. Any more suggestions? Thanks again for all advice!

My parents has a similar porch on their house in St Louis. They had a couple of folding Captain's chairs - you know the ones with canvas seats and backs, and a small round table to hold a drink or book. It was a delightful place to sit right after dinner, but before it got dark and the mosquitoes appeared, which is why there was no reading lamp, just the porch light. It was amazing how private it was. I think the swing looks nice but takes up a lot of room and I wonder if two people will sit on it side-by-side? Usually only those "courting" like to sit together on a swing! My parents did fold up the chairs and stick them to the side so they were not visible from the street. The round table was heavy, true wrought iron - would have been the devil to haul off. They lived in a very nice neighborhood, but people from less nice ones, sometimes passed through, to see what they might find that was portable!

It always bothers me when I can’t see the front door from the street. I would put french doors where the window is if that makes sense from the interior.

I disagree - think it's quite nice where it is. French doors on the front of the house can be a security concern, as well.

The Prop 65 label probably means that they were treated with some kind of fire retardant chemical. Lots of stuff is--pajamas, a lot of furniture. Many of California's warning requirements are vacuous because so many common chemicals are known to cause cancer. If you aren't planning to lick the pillows, you are probably fine. I thought the pillows looked great.

Agree about filling the planters. You could use inserts that you could change out seasonally--evergreens for winter, flowers for summer.

Love the swing. Love the porch. I liked the red pillows as well. I think you could paint the ceiling light blue then switch out seasonal pillows on the swing. Seasonal foliage in the urns highlighted with a string of lights. Add a wreath on the windows above the swing with lights too.

We live in Charleston SC so having your front door on the side porch is very common.

How do you guys feel about adding outdoor curtains as well?

I'm having some serious porch envy over here-- I absolutely love yours. I like the pillows, fan, outdoor rug ideas. Outdoor curtains could be very cool but it depends on the size of the space. You don't want to make it too crowded and drapes outside are more of an aesthetic thing as opposed to function so you do not have the excuse that you need them. But I do like the idea. It could be very cool.

PS I hope there's an RH outlet near you because the outdoor perennial drapes are on crazy sale right now.

What would you think about turning the swing into a bench (add some legs)? Whenever I see a swing that can't actually swing because it would crash into a wall, I think a bench would make more sense. Then I would either fill the urns, or find some big rectangular planters to put along the concrete ledges. Fill them with lots of color and texture, including something drapey / viney that would spill down the front. (Like sweet potato vines.) It's a lovely home - enjoy!

I would like to suggest using a hanging lantern style light fixture, one that would be seen from a distance.

You may think about adding a striking light fixture or 2 for some charming curb appeal.

I was going to suggest wall sconces on either side of the door, but I see them here now.

I would definitely suggest hanging lights from Lantern and Scroll and maybe some yoke lights. I've recently purchased from them and their options are just gorgeous.

In theory, a little table sounds nice, but in your picture the table looks like it’s in the way of people coming and going through the door. And the rug looks like it’s pulled too far away from the swing. I’d turn the rug the other way (or get a bigger one) so you don’t need the small one in front of the door

Your house is very handsome. Have you considered adding a decorative piece above the steps, below or on the half moon window?

And the shrubs below your windows just about need trimming. Getting mighty close to the windowsills.
