Seems to be doing quite well. But - how close are the wires?

Closer than ideal, probably 15 feet from widest part of the tree. I wish those lines were burried. It shouldn't be a problem for a while it has grown about 10 or 11 feet in 13 or 14 years. I've never really pruned it at all. Now the cloud forest maple on the other side of the house has grown several feet a year. But no fall color . the acer Skutchii hasn't made flowers and seed yet but I hope one pollinates the other eventually

I'm going to try and air layer a couple lower branches off of the big tooth next year. It is slow growing relative to the rest of the sugar maple complex and the leaves can be really small. Should make a sweet bonsai

My Quercus buckleyi in the valley are making a nice show. I need to walk back into the back of the valley.

Those look nice. While we are on the subject of texas fall color has anyone seen a cedar elm turn red in the fall ? I've seen yellow and orange is common and I've heard or read somewhere it can be red but I've been looking at them all over and don't see red. What is your favorite texas tree for fall color? Mine is the big tooth because they are all different.

No, never saw a red cedar elm. My elms turn yellow with a tad of orange and then they quickly drop. I like the Quercus buckleyi, because that is what I have a lot of. They make a nice statement in mass. I was noticing that the escarpment black Cherry turns a nice yellow. I need more of them. I don't think I have a favorite. I love them all.

The commonly planted and invasive Chinese tallow is a pretty striking red. Smoke tree is nice too. Ginkgo is awesome gold for about one day.

I enjoyed that tallow at my old house. The chinese lacebark elm and Chinese pistache do once color. Some crepe myrtles do a nice red.

My crape myrtles "Acoma" surprised me this year. They have gone from yellow and red to deep maroon now. I guess that the wider the top the better the display (even though they are only 9-10' tall).

Mara, your Texas red oaks are really putting on a show.

Here's a couple growing on an island across the street from my house ...

    ....

This is my Cedar elm and a Quercus buckleyi behind it. Live oak in the foreground ...

    ...

Omar, I noticed several Crape myrtles in the neighborhood have a bright red color and some more yellow.

Thank you all for posting your fall colors! Aside from crape myrtles and some bradford pear, I haven't seen too much color in my neck of the woods. The white oaks just kind of went from green to slightly golden then brown (and now nearly naked).

Mexican Sugar maple apparently won't show fall color till it start flowering. That could take a while. Pretty neat new growth color though. Grows pretty fast at my parents in law's house nearby Marble Falls compared to Shantung maples which do have pretty decent fall colors. I've seen a bigtooth maple turning red in Lakeway. Nice but not very big.

Big tooth maples are slow , some more than others , they also check badly when transplanted. But for most of texas it is the best maple tree. I hope the Skutchii gets better color wise in time but it gets points for vigor and novelty either way . if it will flower the same time as my big tooth it could make a cool tree

Where did you get your Skutchi? Sounds interesting...very tempting.

Dan hosage - he is an interesting guy - owns and operates madrone nursery in San marcos which mostly sells native plants . I think originally the plant material came from David Creech at SFA. Its an interesting tree largest fruits (samaras) of any maple big leaves very fast growing

Madrone Nursery is still around? That website hasn't been updated since 2011 so I wasn't sure if it's still there. Lol. Interesting guy... Lol. First time I met him, he was walking around nothing but shoes and shorts. I got Skutchi from SFA (I graduated from there many moons ago). I managed to get some seeds (huge!) and grew one. I planted it at my neighbor's in 2011 or 2012. Wonder how that one is doing? SFA Gardens sell them at the plant sale in October and March. SFA has a big tree there... here's some information - https://dcreechsite.wordpress.com/2016/05/11/acer-skutchii-the-rare-mexico-mountain-sugar-maple/
