Could we please see a pic of the finished wood? Why does it look awful? Did the stain run?

Pine does not stain well without some serious effort.. It is very soft, has large pores and does not take stain evenly without preparation before staining.

It sure as hell can not be SPRAYED with stain, the equivalent of you sticking your head in a tub of bleach, and expecting radiant and lustrous highlights.. No prep, and a lazy assed hack job is what happened.

Yes, you can stain pine. And it will look like...stained pine. Lipstick on a pig.

There's nothing wrong with pine, in its place. But it ain't walnut and no amount of stain will ever make it look like it is. The wild grain (it's usually flat-sawn) gives it away.

Light staines on pine usually come out orange. I have successfully stained pine stair treads and shelves made out of fir joist (a type of pine) but a pre-stain should be used and a dark stain. I used Early American (Varathane) on the stairs and Special Walnut (Rustoleum) on the shelves - they came out rustic, which was the intent.

I originally tried a light stain on the shelves - mistake as they turned orange, then I used the Special Walnut - so you can try going over the stain with a darker stain, unless that is not the look you wanted. Otherwise, they should sand the stain off.
