When I was researching this topic, I read that top lights created unwanted shadows on your face so side lights were preferable. I have a bathroom w/ top lights and one with side lights and don’t see much of a difference. I placed them the way I did b/c of spacing, no other reason. I also have magnifying lighted makeup mirror on the vanity counter.

I have a can light in the ceiling above the sink and 1 light beside the mirror, should have put a light on each side of the mirror

I am going with two pendant lights on each side of a single sink -- just as BossyVossy says, they will be about 36" above the counter top so they will be basically face-level. They will be mounted in front of a large mirror, so the light will be magnified.

Don't put lights above the mirror - as noted the shadows are BRUTAL. And they don't get any "kinder" as we get older. Nice diffused light coming from face level is much nicer.

I saw one custom mirror that had the LEDs integrated into it. that's catching on in the medicine cabinet world, too.

We have been traveling lately and this is another option that I find works really well. These mirrors with recessed lights, no sconce on the wall, it doesn't really serve a purpose in this application.
