Brassavola nodosa - grandiflora?

last modified: 8 years ago

This is one of the new changes to brassavola nodosa, some plants are being classified as sub variety "grandiflora" (large flower). I have asked several commercial growers to delineate the various differences tween the two types and frankly did not get much of a clear answer. i don't know if anyone has checked to see if larger flowers are just 4N (tetraploid) and not necessarily a different variety. There is a new tussle brewing between the lumpers and the splitters in the taxonomy world.

The closest thing to a noted difference is that the grandiflora tend to have a more spread out and flattened leaf that the regular nodosa.

I recently bought this baggie at a big box store and it was in spike at the time, just because I like the parents in the cross. Cross made by HR nurseries. see label and their matching number on their catalog

I pulled the plant, with as much of potted material as possible, from pot and wrapped it in coco fiber mat (same stuff they use for basket liners) and placed in a plastic net pot. This to not disturb the roots during a slow growing time of year. Plant has not been watered at all durng past few weeks as morning dew has soaked it regularly. Will probably mount it on some king of wood next spring. The flowers are very large and have been open for about a month when picture was taken.. and as with all nodosa's, incredibly fragrant after dark.... so... if you want to trigger their fragrance during the day, just get a big cardboard box that would would fit over the plant without damaging it and within 30 minutes the fragrance will kick in.
