I can't tell if that's completely covered in mud or what. If it's corroded that badly it may be scrap metal, but if it's just dirt, a good pressure washing followed by sandblasting may make it actually usable again.

These are hideously expensive to buy new, these days, if anyone actually makes them. So I wouldn't chuck it without checking it out. But at this point it requires a lot of labor in order to do something with it.

Those two fluted, inter meshed cylinders reminds me of a sorghum or cane mill. The mill crushes and squeezes fluid out of sorghum or cane.

Compare with this youtube of sorghum press. OP, how would you feed apples into your version? Are you in Dixie?

Agree....looks like a mill rather than a press. Although grapes are sometimes crushed in a similar apparatus ....could it be a grape press?

Sugar Cane Mill, hand cranked.

This press has fluted cylinders for grabbing and pulling the tough cane through the mill. An adjustment is provided for setting the space between cylinders. Sorghum mills may have cylinders with no flutes, but may have roughened surfaces.

I watched one of these in action last year at an old German demonstration farm here in MO. They actually had a horse powered version - the horse walked in a circle and the press was in the center. They poured the juice into a rectangular tube that was probably 3x5 ft. and held 50-100 gals, with a wood fire underneath. People sure went to any lengths to get their sweets back then. We don't know how good we have it.
