Dining room feedback

We just bought this dining room table and I am questioning if it is too much wood overall or too much variation in color along with the floors. Considering returning it. If we keep it we will be getting four black metal chairs. Kitchen is adjacent and has cherry wood cabinets the same color as the blinds. Originally I bought the China cabinet off Craigslist with the intention of painting it black but after I saw it I decided to leave it but I am considering painting it again.

TIA, husband is no help with these sort of things.

You have four types of wood in medium finishes. Yes, that is a lot.

A rug is a great idea. Do you think a dark wood table would look better? I was hoping the black base would break it up a bit but right now it just looks like a lot of wood.

I also agree with getting a rug to brighten up the room. Also, I think replacing the blinds with a white one will help lessen the room from all of that wood because you already have wood on one wall from the China cabinet. Then decorate the table with a solid colored table runner and a beautiful flower vase. Does the other side of the table have chairs or a bench?

For some reason the full picture isn't showing up let me try again.

One side will have a bench and the other side will have black metal chairs that I haven't gotten yet.

What about the China cabinet? I'm not super attached to it, it was only $135 but I don't have money to replace it with a different one right now.

The table seems to large for the space especially if you add 4 chairs. They'll be bumping into the counter stools. The breakfront is traditional and the table more contemporary. A picture showing the kitchen would help as it's all 1 room

I agree with jck910--VERY tight space for that table and chairs. I personally don't have a problem with the wood finishes.

a rug would help. It's feeling a little cramped in there. I think removing the drapes and those wood blinds and replacing w/a shade, would really help.

If you are bringing in some metal chairs, will those tall blue ones stay in the same spot? seems like it might be crowded.

I don't mind the hutch, but painting it black, even if it's just the inside, (and showcasing some white pottery) would look nice. this one is gray, but you get the idea

If you don't have anything bright to display, then consider painting the inside of it one of your light sage or blue colors. another idea is to line the back inside w/mirror.

try this,,,remove the curtains, and bring in a rug that you may have elsewhere. remove the stacked containers in the corner. now take another picture and post that.

Return the table-it looks too big. The china cabinet would look great black and provide an opportunity to update the hardware...

If you do go with a wood table top, change out the shade and get a lighter rug.

An area rug will solve the "too much wood" issue. I would agree with you that the china cabinet would work best if painted either black, or an accent color. With those two fixes you can keep your current table :)

Have you thought about replacing the lighting fixture as well? A series of 2-3 industrial pendants would look really nice.

Switch the chairs to under the window and the bench by the counter stools...then they won't bump into each other. I like the rug idea and think the china cabinet painted black would look amazing :)

The counter stools will stay, we use that area a lot to eat. I do have a lot of fiesta ware I can put in the China cabinet. I was in the process of unloading Christmas stuff when I took the picture so I agree the containers are not helping the space look any bigger. If we decide to keep the table I think we will put the chairs on the window side and the bench towards the kitchen. The area behind the photo is open to the living room. I agree the light fixture is too small now but we just replaced it a year ago when we moved in. We had a smaller table and China cabinet then so it looked ok originally. I will take more pictures once I get the Christmas stuff cleared out.

Try widening the curtain rod as well so that the window looks bigger and brighter.

Other perspective of space to give feedback for the entire space to harmonize. Rug, painting china cabinet and updated lighting would help to break up the woods, however it depends on the adjacent space. Inspiration of cabinet painted white as well with plantation shutters and jute rug.

JDgail I know what you mean about the curtains. All the other curtains I own have grommets so they slide off to the side a lot easier. These I picked up on clearance and didn't realize they were pockets. I couldn't get them to scrunch off to the sides like all my other ones so they ended up covering half the dang window.

I need to get a new rug for the living room too because the one I have in there is WAY to small. Would you do two of the same rug? I was thinking something like this.

I really like your hutch, and your floors are beautiful. Before painting the hutch I would remove that shade or at least use a white one. I also think that the table is too big for your space.

You did not ask.....but I would not use a backless bench. They are mighty uncomfortable and a pain to be climbing in and out.

jj-back to drapes-is other end any wider? rings? Will the rod go wider regardless? How many do you need to seat at the table? is kitchen open to living?

We think adding a rug under the table might help the "too much wood" look. Also why not try the bench by the stools and chairs where the stool is now? That might work better than where you have the bench now. Otherwise the table might be too big.

I would remove the drapes and do roman blinds if you want fabric. They physically make an already tight room even smaller -- people will be trying not to lean against them as they eat.
