I have no clue what would possess you to A. First attempt a remedy for a thing that has not yet even happened. B. Go at it with an indelible Sharpie, which will never get you more than brown, on anything but white paper. Lemon has bleaching properties by the way. I doubt the "remedy" contained oranges?

These rugs, unless created from REAL AND NATURAL HIDE in it's natural state, which is nearly indestructible, are like any other surface dyed/printed rug. Live with it or start over......or get some fabric paint and a very small small brush.

I have a cowhide rug and my cats don't touch it. why would you think yours would?? it's not exactly something they can get their claws into. I've found that if you provide scratching posts, rubbed w/catnip, they won't touch anything else in the house.

as for the rug, you're stuck with it. you've basically bleached it. You may be able to take it to a dyer, but I'm sure that would cost way more than replacing it.

Jan -- Since you have "no clue" as to what possesses me to do things, please keep your harsh words to yourself. I'm surprised you didn't use bold letters. Since I do not have a relationship with a "pro", I researched the Internet and GardenWeb to obtain natural remedies to deter the cats from clawing on furniture and carpet. I didn't expect anyone here to judge me or be rude. Examples "A" and "B" were condescending and awful. I was looking for someone to share ideas and help me with my issue not try to make me feel worse.

Beth -- All creatures are unique and since your cats don't touch your furniture, you are fortunate. I use scratching posts and catnip but my cats scratch everywhere. I am not stuck with the rug because the carpet dealer will help by repairing or replacing my rug.

My Bengals have clawed my brand new cowhide so so so badly...anyone have suggestions? I'm ready to turn them into a rug. (This is a joke) but seriously I am so heart
