Latisse

When I was younger I had really thick long eyelashes, but those days are long ago. With mascara and an eyelash curler they didn't look too bad, but not so great.

Latisse seemed expensive (and a long-time commitment) so I didn't bother. But the place I go for other products had a buy 2, get 1 free, so I figured I'd give it a try. They told me to use one drop for both eyes, applied with an eyeliner brush, basically doubling the number of applications from one bottle.

After 3 weeks I imagined I saw a bit of growth, but I wasn't sure. It's been 7-1/2 weeks and it's not my imagination anymore. In fact, the other day I curled my lashes for the last time because they looked a little crazy. Application of mascara is all they need and they stay curled all by themselves. It's a miracle!

I've had no irritation at all. I apply at night, after washing my face. Although my hair is gray, my lashes and brows are still dark and I've read that dark hair responds to Latisse better than blonds and redheads.

They say that you won't see the full results till 12 weeks. I actually hope mine don't grow much longer, but thicker would be great. Perhaps I can get away with applying less than 7 days/week.

I don't have a Before photo. This is after 8 weeks of Latisse every day. No makeup, no mascara.

NOTE: Slight "pigmentation" at lash line is my failure to completely remove tenacious pencil eyeliner. Just to be sure, after the photo I went over it with a Q-tip in makeup remover and it all came off, but I'm not taking another photo.

I'm doing it! Your lashes look great. I was at the dermatologist yesterday, and the nurse had such pretty lashes. I complimented her, and she said its Latisse! She said almost the entire staff was using it! When medical professionals use something themselves...I'm sold

I want to play! Anybody know why the Latisse requires a prescription, while others such as Rodan + Fields do not?

Bossyvossy, how did you get the Latisse prescription online?

It’s been 4 years since I first bought it. I am 100% sure I didn’t go to a dr for a prescription . Seems like I filled a questionnaire on the Latisse website, a dr cleared it and authorized my buying online. After that initial purchase they hounded me so product was very easily available. Maybe things have changed but I would call them. They make it easy, but if you have a history of eye problems maybe it’d be prudent to get a REAL prescription.

Latisse is a prescription drug used to treat a disease (glaucoma) that has the side effect of hair growth. The Rodan + Fields product is a cosmetceutical that does not claim to have medicinal qualities but claims to grow hair.

For my glaucoma, I do not use Latisse but a sibling medicine that is also a prostaglandin. I am told to make sure that I do not leave extra medicine on my eyelids as it may cause a darkening of the skin. I have been on this medicine two years and have not noticed that or any change in eye color. I do use the drops in both eyes in case I would have pigment changes. I am not sure that I have really seen much change in lash growth but maybe I do not remember what they were like before.

I will do my brow before and after with RevitaLash purchased during Nordstrom's summer sale. I used it faithfully every day for 5 weeks prior to DD's wedding. I have used it sporadically since September, maybe 1-2 x per week.

I'm interested, too. I'll be 64 next week and my lashes and brows are thinning. I have to get a thyroid ultrasound every year to watch a lump that so far, is benign, so I don't know if that's part of my problem.

How does one get an online prescription? I looked online at doctors in my area, but my dermatologist isn't on the list. I don't have a cosmetic surgeon.

    Thanks.

Be careful basing your choice on Amazon reviews. As much as I like (and purchase from) Amazon, I don't think you can trust reviews. Latisse is proven effective and I personally know several who have had great results from the Roden & Fields product. You might want to do a search online of bloggers using these products. I've seen several before/after pics that way. My lashes are good, it's my eyebrows that need help. I have a derm appt. after the first of the year and may ask for a latisse script, but I'm going to check the price of the R&F before then.

Latisse doesn't take a prescription, not here anyway. Here it is sold in Dr. offices where you get botox, fillers, etc.

I think, i may be wrong, that if they claim it grows hair, it has to be s prescription. They can use the same active ingredient and just say it creates the "appearance" of hair growth, and it does not need a prescription.

Not sure but that is the sense i got?

Rogaine regrows hair and no longer needs a prescription. Maybe Latisse will be the same at some point. There is a spa here that has it, so I may check with them.

My hairdresser says it makes lashes longer, but not really thicker. He said on some people, the lashes get so long, he must give them a "haircut". Decided not to bother with this expensive treatment - it's fullness I want and age has taken that away forever.

My lashes are longer and thicker with Latisse. Perhaps it is helping more lashes grow where fewer were growing before? Prior to Latisse, my lashes had become so thin that when I used Mascara, most of it ended up on my eyelid because the brush went right through my lashes. That is no longer the case. Once I achieved the full effect, I decreased usage to about two or three times a week; I've been on that "maintenance" program for a couple of years now and my lashes have stayed long and thick.

Jellytoast, I'm hoping to have your results and success.

Even before, my lashes weren't all the same length. I too am hoping that the ones that didn't grow as long will lengthen and result in a generally thicker appearance. I've read anecdotally that there can be both thickening and darkening of lashes.

Thank you, jellytoast. I too am hoping for the similar results of thickness as much as length. I also have some of varying length and mine are mostly an ok length as is, but I would definitely like to have thicker lashes.

That's fast! Too fast for your lash boost even. I'm trying to help a son move over the mid year break so he can be closer to his student teaching schools -- which are 45 min - 2 hours away, depending on traffic. They are required to be 10-20 min from their schools. This is getting complicated.

Still looking at the serums. I was still waffling between ordering that one and the R&F because I would like to improve my lower lashes. I did a little research on serum for lower lashes and read that they don't recommend it due to the increased chance of getting the serum in your eye and having complications from that (including greater risk of complications from Lasik or glaucoma procedures). They also say that you get enough on the lower lid from blinking to impact the lower lashes with less risk.

Get this! I had hand surgery last week and as I'm on the table, the anesthesiologist nurse said" You have the most amazing eyelashes!" I have used Latisse for about 2 years, and I wanted to say, "You are medical people! Don't you recognize this!" I was half out of it by then so I just said thank you. I use it on my upper lashes, lower lashes and eyebrows. They all look great and I'm happy to have the ends of my eyebrows back. Couldn't be happier and I will continue to use it, every two or three days now. I also use a skinny eyeliner brush. The ones included are ridiculous and designed to waste product.

Oakley, don't put on makeup and mascara. Take a close up picture of your closed eye, so that your lashes really show. Crop it to just show your eye, like Linelle and SueB did above.

Week 9. They had a growth spurt. This is with mascara, but not the lash lengthening kind. A bit of pencil eyeliner and neutral shadow. I don't want the long ones to get any longer! I hope this is the extent of their growth and that the shorter ones will catch up a bit.

That is a big difference -- more than I would expect is mascara. I ordered the Rapid Lash through Costco and figured I would start there. Hasn't arrived yet.

Very interesting. My DH has those lashes and eyebrows without trying or using anything.: (. I have short lashes and scant eyebrows. I'm definitely going to do the same and order through Costco.

How much would you say you spend a year keeping your lashes and eyebrows long. Or is it strictly special occasion wear.

    Bunny thanked yeonassky

Yeonassky, these various products rely on consistent use for their results, so it's not something you can just do on occasion. If you had a special event and wanted to make your lashes fuller, you might need to start using the product several weeks, a month or even 2 to get the results you want -- depending on your lashes growth pattern and the extent of change you want. Just want to make sure you realize this isn't something you just apply and go for a special event.

from what I have read here and in various reviews. it sounds like most tubes of the various products last at least a month or two and some say several months. I've seen products that sell for less than $20 per tube to nearly $200, so there could be a wide range in what people spend. The Rapid Lash at Costco is about $50 for 2 tubes. I'm expecting $50-$100 per year if this works for me.

I'm in Mexico now, and I can buy Lumigan (made by Allegran) for about $45 or Latanoprost which is a generic that is similar, but not exactly the same for about $10. Has anyone tried Latanoprost??

After about 10 days of my Peter Thomas Roth lash serum, I woke up this morning and thought my lashes looked darker or maybe thicker? — my initial thought was that I forgot to remove my mascara yesterday, but then realized I didn’t use mascara yesterday. Subtle, but something is happening.

    Bunny thanked Sueb20

Latanoprost is the prescription that I am on for my glaucoma. I do not know that I have had any big change. My family was not aware that I had eyelashes so they are no help. I know the office staff at my eye specialist have mentioned the men with long eyelashes from it.

I'm guessing its up to the individual how they respond.

    Bunny thanked RNmomof2 zone 5

Thank you. I will keep that in mind. And that's what I meant that some people might just use it for that special occasion starting 6 months in advance or something like that and then not use it afterwards. I'm sure not everybody's going to use it all the time. they'll Wax and Wane with it because it's a commitment. I suppose it was too broad a question regarding money but thank you for trying to answer it. :-)

I ended up with one bottle of Lumigan at $40, and I was able to buy three bottles of Latanoprost for $7 each, so it's no great loss if it doesn't work. I also bought 3 tubes of generic Retin-A for $5 each. I'm looking forward to our "lash off" in a couple of months.:-)

For those of you who use Latisse. I googled prices for Latisse to see which pharmacy had the best price today and a website called Good RX came up with a coupon. I honestly thought it was bogus $74.27 at CVS. when filling another prescription today I asked if they accepted coupons from this site and without hesitation was told yes. The cash price quoted by the pharmacist was $157

Went home, printed the coupon and only paid the $74! The site has discounted coupons for Retin a also. HTH

I also saw the GoodRx prices. Going that route, one would still need a prescription first, right?

    last modified: 8 years ago

Please note that the prices above are for 2.5 ml generic. I bought my Latisse from a doctor for $179 for 5 ml. So somewhat comparable. I got mine on a special 3 for the price of 2, or roughly $120 for 5 ml. My 5 ml should last at least 3 months and I should be able to get similar deals to keep me stocked. If my eyelashes keep growing I’ll probably be able to get away with applying 2-3 times/week which means 5 ml will last twice as long.

AMJ you do need a prescription. Linelle my prescription was filled with a generic but I am fine with that for this use. After reading your message my first thought was dang, I missed that, but I just checked my bottle and I did receive 5 ml So I am happy with the Good RX process. It's worth a try as opposed to almost double the price of the brand.

some medications I wouldn't use a generic unless I had to for cost reasons, but for eyelashes it should be fine.

joshuasamah, I didn't mean to imply that generic is not as good as, only that it's probably reflecting a lower price. I'm glad that your bottles are 5 ml. That's indeed a very good deal.

Catty, where do you buy your generic Lumigan? Do you need a prescription? I've never actually had a prescription in hand, as my Latisse is being dispensed by the doctor's office, so the prescription is kinda conceptual.

Cattyles, what is your method for applying the Lumigan?

    Bunny thanked terezosa / terriks

I bought my first tube of Latisse from the dermatologist. When I realized it was Lumigan, I started getting prescriptions for the generic from my PCP. I would tell the pharmacy I was paying cash rather than using my insurance because it was for my lashes, not glaucoma (I didn't want to end up with glaucoma on my medical history). Then, about 5 years ago I asked one of the pharmacists at the hosp where I work what they did with the expired Lumigan. They used to throw it away. Not anymore! :-)

Linelle, I would explain to your PCP that you would like a prescription for generic Lumigan instead of paying so much for Latisse.

Terriks, I still use the brush from my original tube of Latisse. I squeeze a drop into the cap of the generic Lumigan, dip the brush and apply to my lash line. One drop is more than enough. Then I replace the brush into the dry Latisse container. I'm not recommending that anyone use anything past the exp date, though.
