NoID, green, shiny leaves

Hi there

I took that pic in another garden (mid Europe, coolish z7b)

it has been there for ages, tough a s nailes, probably older (when they bought the neglected place, they found all sorts of survivers after clearing a wood of sapling trees),

so likely 20 y old, probably a common cultivar

would be glad if you could name likely candidates because I`m impressed by its resilience (and probably cannot dig up a couple of divisions...)

and that`s a close up, not sure whether it is spreading by rhizomes/ runners (do Hostas do that at all?) or just growing into any available space...

Lin it could be H. ventricosa, a venerable old species.

the defining factor with V ... is its satiny look .... and wavy edge ....

it was considered a species for a long time... too lazy to look up its current status .... one of the defining traits of a species.. would be that it comes true from seed ...

if its been reduced to cultivar status... then it would not ...

more than you ever cared to know ... lol

Lin, I have no idea what the hosta is, but it looks great... and I'm just really happy to look at pictures of green growing things right now! I also like that it is growing up through the crack in the sidewalk... reminds me of that song: Spanish Harlem.

peren.all, thanks, that seems to fit very well.

I looked up H ventricosa, I happen to have the tomb-ish "The Genus Hosta" by Schmid in my bookshelf, which I sometimes bravely open and try to read some pages...

@beverlymnz4 do you think those are seedlings? just hadn`t considered it, when I had a small Hosta bed those did not produce seedlings, so I had not expected it. To the left of the larger plant are 2 or three blurry small ones, that could be indeed young seedlings

@ Ken, could you point me to a source about the current name? Schmid describes it as a "natural species, and naturally tetraploid", so that would be interesting if there cropped up new defintions in the meantime

another thing that Schmid described is that it sets seeds in a special way (more complicated than self pollination) that come true, so that would explan the spread of uniform Hostas.

the schmid tome was my start .... but he updated the species section ... in the hosta library ...

look for the pic of george.. on the front page of the library ... i'll let you start there..

i forgot about the cool bell shaped dark purple striped flowers ....

it does appear.. from a very superficial reading.. that it is a species ... have fun with the history ... i get lost with all the science ...
