hi, yes you are right about that. I know of a few who in zones 6 and 7 have seen basjoo flowers. Without protection in zone 6 it might not come back. depending how cold it gets and how deep the corm is planted. zone 7 should come back Just fine. from stubs near ground level or underground corm.

It's about keeping the stem from freezing as you know. Mulch about 3 inches first. Then I used to wrap x mas lights around the base of the clump and some of the trunk. The lights that give off a little heat and put a trash can over top.

Im in central Jersey and I uncover mine the beginning of March. As long as nights arent much below freezing they will be fine. Once the days start getting warmer the covered stem will start to rot. The trick is keeping it wrapped up for as short a time as possible.
