Any other recommendations on pulling the space together or making it look nicer?

I like your french door instead of the slider idea and the shutters on the window. But. then will you need light control or privacy issues? Or, dog slobbers on the french door so you'll have to clean daily? lol

If you do the shutters on the window, it would look nice to put a "fainting couch" or similar under the window as a reading nook. Something like this bench for under the window. It's also an ottoman storage for books or magazines? A pharmacy lamp by the bench would make a nice reading space.

Match the color to the walls to make the space appear bigger. You need a new light over the table. When they shine down they tend to wash out food colors and cast ugly nose and hair shadows on diners' faces.

Decoenthusiaste, I never thought of it like that but I do dislike the down light in the bathroom and it is indeed unflattering. I wonder why everyone puts pendants over islands then?

As far as window treatments go, think about how you want to control light, heat, cold and privacy before making a decision.

They do make sliding shutters for sliding doors...not inexpensive but an option instead of French doors if you want a cohesive look. You won’t get the open look of French doors, though since there’s always a shutter on the window unless you get an a hinged fold, which has stability drawbacks re:size.

I think the room needs softening, so soft window treatments with an area rug may help. You can also do a horizontal soft treatment like a Hunter Douglas silhouette that coordinates nicely with shutters...the largest silhouette vane can be roughly the same depth/height as a shutter louvre...coordinates well in like colors.

Taking wider drapes/Roman shade to ceiling height will give a welcome change of proportion to the space. Arch the space with a rug under the table and chairs.

I agree with you all about the need for a rug under this table! It's the only area of the house that feels especially "hard" so that should help soften things. I'm going to look at a nice set of shutters for the window and something matching, if possible, for the slider. I love French doors but this could be a start for us. Also, I like the idea of switching out the light. This picture really caused me some stress, it looks so hard and cold unlike the rest of the house!

Use shutters ! They can go on doors too not just windows.

If you replace the slider with French doors, check where they will swing when open in relation to the table. If the table is moved, the light probably will need to be moved also.

The problem with French doors is they swing inwards and take up floor space.
